How to attach 1999 scenic roof bars/rails

Hi all, I have a 1999 scenic and was wondering how to attach Genuine renault roof bars if I buy them. I dont have any holes in the gutter trim like I have seen on some models. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Roof inserts

Hi, my scenic does not have any inserts in the rubber roof trim for roof bars, is it possible to buy these.Or can you cut the original trim. If so are they expensive. Cheers. Glynn

roof bar strips

Hi to forum
I too bought some genuine Renualt aerodynamic bars for my Scenic on eBay but didn't check to see if I had the black strips with the flaps to slide back to fit the bars to the roof.
The bars arrived and I then realised I had a problem. I took off the plastic strips (they just pull off - take care with the front and back finishing caps at each end so as not to break them) which revealed three fixing points (from memory) on each side to clamp the bars to.
I didn't want to drive the car around without the black plastic strips on and so measured carefully where the bar's feet should pass through the strips and with a drill and stanley knife carefully cut out slots at the right position.
I then refitted the strips and clamped the bar's feet through to the roof. I then carefully refitted the end caps.
One didn't fit properly and I had to use double sided tape (with foam between the sticky sides) but it went on and has stayed on (two years now).
You can apparently buy roof strips with the right slide back openings but Renault charge an arm and a leg.
I leave my bars on and check they are clamped tightly regularly so they don't part company. I took them off on one occasion when we travelled gown to the Vendee in France without our roof box attached and wanted to be aerodynamic. The holes I had cut bugged me so I bought some simple carpet tape in black and after cleaning up the plastic strips with turps and left to dry they went on a trip and stayed on until I returned home and put the bars back on.
I will prob sell the Scenic with the bars left on so am not worried about the slots that I cut into the strips.
The bars make no noise whatsoever and I can't really say I get less MPG with them off.
Hope this is of interest.

Hi guys
I know this topic has been debated heavily already but I still need more info on the whole roof bars thing for a Scenic MK1 car. I need to fit official Renault roof racks on my Scenic (I don't want to go for roof racks that latch onto the inside of the doors because the doors wouldn't shut properly after the Halford guys installed it) but the price quoted by Renault for part and installation exceeded 300 (apparently the part for MK2 scenics was much cheaper?). So I'm looking at sourcing the roof bars from elsewhere.

My Scenic MK1 ('52 reg) has the long uniform black strip on each side of the roof. I took them off to look at what's underneath and I cannot find any roof bar fixing point "holes", although there are some "bent metal bits" (can't find a better description) coming out along the gutter. Are those "bent metal bits" the fixing points for the roof racks? To me they look like the bits used to hold the strips (although there are three longer ones).
If the fixing points are indeed those longer ones (does anyone have a picture?) then I am aware that I'll also need to find newer strips with sliders (or get the knife out!). Does anyone know if other cars are using the same part maybe (in order to broaden the search)?
