Thanks for all your help.

I decided I wasn't going to wait til my local garage could fit me in and went to my local 'fast-fit' type place this afternoon. It was indeed the rear shock absorber, it had snapped where the bolt fixes on, just in like some of the photos on the thread.

I had a look at my tyres before I went to the garage and there are no bulges, they sit completely fine on the road. My previous car which I scrapped before getting this one had a bulge in one of the tyres. The two front tyres will need replaced soon though, maybe get 1,000 miles out of them if I am lucky, will get them done before that in a couple of weeks.

I was dismayed to find though that my rear brake discs are rusted badly and pitted. The person that sold the car to me replaced the discs at the front and put new pads on the rear but not new rear discs! The guys doing the shock absorber let me look under the car and showed me so thats another thing to be done. They quoted me 180 for the discs, is that not excessive??

I'm glad I got the shocker done though as my husband has got a long journey this weekend and I wasn't happy with him driving it incase he caused more damage. The noise of the shocker actually happened when he was driving it last night, he thought something was rattling in the boot! Even I knew it wasn't that.

Your supplier/engineer is not doing you any favours if they did not stress - Just fitting one new shocker!
Is that wise?

Always change a pair.

Two further points -
There is a special sequence to use when refitting these shock absorbers to a Renault -
They have to be 'SET' particular way - read Haynes. And when you think about it - It makes sense!

From your entry here it is not too late to reset the one you presumably have now installed.

Secondly you have perhaps noticed the damage/crack
occurred at the very point the shaft is welded in the cup
next to the mounting tube. How the hell they can ensure good welding with this design - beats me.
Non Renault shockers tend not to have this cup.
However in the event of the Renault shaft fracturing, then the cup does atleast hold the shaft end captive -
assuming you go easy after the incident. If the non Renault part fractured in the same place then
that wheel would be instantly a no goer. Perhaps even damaging the body work also.

I've had communications with Renault in the past & noted other similar shocker fractures.
Renault simply declared - Age of car!

One suspects however this is a weak point (presumably now modified) - BUT the reset sequence
highlighted in Haynes - Does not appear to be practical on a production line -
hence that assembly may actually be the cause. Certainly I'm not aware of other shock absorbers
that have this particular cup design.

The Cup - Excellent idea though - since after I broke mine on a farm track -
I travelled 200 miles unknowingly with a captive broken shocker. Only discovered when I unloaded
the car and travelled three miles unladden.

Suggest you replace the other shocker too!
PLUS carry out the reset sequence on BOTH then.

Re: Renault Scenic - Rear Suspension Knock,Shock Absorbers Commonly Snapping

well i say Renault need to be more Honest about the faults in their cars, saying Age of car is crap, we have realy bad roads out here, and shock absorbers breaking is unheard of, unless you own a Renault, i broke one not long ago on my scenic. 114000ks, thats onlt about 70000 miles, if european car manufacturers think thats acceptable, they need to visit Japan and learn how to build better cars., Renault should source more of their cars from Nissan, and we will see far more reliable products. (and better looking cars as well) sorry but im not impressed with Renaults products or their prices of used parts either. ilooked at the window winder yesterday, it has broken, what a flimsy afair, and priced off the market.
