Hi Folks, Well i've done around 1000 miles with new gearbox. Seems they were surprised at the dealers when they were told to change the box, they have presumed it was the hydraulic valve. The car now seems to be running ok although i do have a slight whine from the car around 40/45 mph which the dealer can't pin down and have now recontacted Renualt uk about.
As for not knowing about any faults obviously that is bulls***. I have been told the hydraulic valve failing on renault auto boxes are relativley common.

Just found this thread from a search and joined. My 2001 1.6 RXE auto has the same problem from cold. After about 3 miles the box warning light comes on and goes into safe mode. Switching off and back on again clears it. No error codes found in system after last service. Mileage 36K It's been doing it for the last 18K. Worse in winter.

Thanks for the advice, my 2004 Scenic has a similar problem. It also tends to 'slip' a lot when changing from 1st to 2nd. I still have a few days of warranty left.

similar problem

We have a similar problem in our auto 98 Scenic

The charge light periodically comes on and the gear box goes haywire not changing to the next gear (reaving really high) and sometimes starting off in a low gear(no the snow start is not engaged). Heavy thump changes. The car will sometimes rev very high and i let off the throttle a bit can sometimes trick it into changing. Again the problem goes away for an undetermined time if I stop turn off and restart.

It's a strange problem so a little hard to pin point the exact situation it arises. Usually it is when going up hill or accellerating when overtaking on the highway(the most annoying time).

Hoping to get some better understanding of the problem before I let some monkey touch it and maybe fix the wrong part.

Wondering how much of the problem is electric alternator/solenoid as has been suggested in this thread.
Any 2cents appreciated.
