Can anyone tell me at what mileage or age should the cam belt be changed on a 1.9dci, it's 2002. I've looked in the manual that came with the car and cannot find it, or in the warranty book either. My mates got a petrol scenic and just happened to ask when it was due on mine, so its got me worrying. Winter and all that !! It's done 62k miles too.

Anyone ?? :driving:

Hi to all

I have a Scenic dti turbo, 1998 model,

With the car came the Warranty - Servicing booklet, and on page 25 it states the timing belt must be changed every =

50,000 miles, or every 5 years.

Most other renault cars are 70k or 72k,

I replaced mine at 50k, and have the belt and 2x pulleys ready for the 2nd change, (it's overdue)

Well my 2000 / 2.0L 16V Scenic Sport decide to throw its auxiliary belt at the end of last year and it wrapped itself around the crankshaft, damaging the cam belt at the same time

Luckily it was as I started the car so on strip down it had only bent some valves

Had a mechanic mate do the work (he bought all the specialist tools for himself ready to do others) and total cost including getting the head checked / new valves / guides fitted (they supplied all the gaskets bolts etc as well) came to just over £500 so not too bad (although I now owe him some welding work)
Only problem was the time it took due to the weather – doh!

Advice he was given from a mate who is a Renault mechanic

1. Don’t do the job as its a pig to take the head off etc (too late as he had already done it)
2. The alternator pulley goes sharp on the serrations overtime and damages the belt
3. Turn the engine 4-5 times to ensure the timing is in the correct place
4. Be careful with the locking pin as there is a step just near the hole and can get misaligned – it needs 2 people to do this, one to turn the engine back and forth with a TDC stick down the plug hole and a mate ‘feeling’ for the locating hole
5. Don’t use the locking pin nor cam alignment tool as a lever when tightening the crank or cam bolts – they will bend / break (sump off to get broken locking pin!!!!)

Car all running okay now so it can be sorted – unfortunately you just need to find a good ‘low cost’ mechanic!

You can't really tell how old or good a cam belt is via a visual inspection I'm afraid

Is there a service book with the car...has it been filled in?
Is the seller the previous owner, if not you may be able to contact them

Hi,
As a rule of thumb, I've always taken the view that if a car has done more than 45k miles in a previous ownership, get the cambelt and the tensioner etc replaced.
The cost repairing the damage caused by a snapped belt is several times the cost of a belt replacement. As to when a belt should be changed it dependes how old the vehicle is ,mileage and how it is driven- How long is a piece of string??

The renault specification for a timing blet change is 72,000 miles or 5 years whichever comes first. And I agree with Happyspear its best to get it done sooner rather than later. Also remebr it is recommended to ahve a complet timing belt kit fitted, along with water pump and auxiliuary belt. Agte rmarket compnents an dmaterilas should come to around £130 or so and labour should be 2-3 hours.
When it comes to price only by phoning around will you get true prices but £250 to £350 would a rough estimate.:)

Just had mine done.

cam belt, auxiliary belt and water pump changed. £430 inc at Blackboys service station sussex. including loan of a courtesy car.

I got one quote from Renault main dealer for comparison- £524 for just the belts change! for water pump as well I was quoted around £700 plus.

Then got 3 independent Renault garages to quote in East and West Sussex. Prices were Hove £691 inc, Fontwell west sussex £490 inc and Blackboys east Sussex £430 inc.

I would not do this job myself due to complexity/special tools etc, and I need the car for work daily. So if you want a garage to do it, my advice is to shop around

while on the subject of cambelts...i have a renault senic 1.6 16 v and the timing belt snapped due to a fault water pump.anyway i lapped in 16 new valves and a new water pump but is there a possibility that the camshafts could be out of line with the camshaft sprockets? i.e could the sprockets move with the camshaft stationary??

It's my Scenics big five year service in September, I've only owned it nearly two years and I've always taken it to the same garage and never had a problem. They've quoted me:

£593 inc VAT for a Timing Belt Change, Water Pump Replacement and a service

I was just wondering if this seemed about right or wether you think I'd be able to get it cheaper? How much would you guys advice such work would cost?

Just had mine done (5 years, not near the mileage) including the water pump and they renewed the 'external' drive belt as well.
Garage supplied all parts .
Total cost £335-00, including new anti-freeze.
They even drove me home when I dropped it off and offered to pick me up to collect. :d
Local garage here in Witney (Oxfordshire)
