All Renault Scenic I Phase II owners - please read this thread

Hi again all

My 2000 Renault Scenic's mirrors do not move when I use the control. Can anybody help or know what I should do please?

...and another goes up in smoke, last night, Scenic Sport, 1.9 diesel, Y reg

parked next to our woodstore/oil tank, I dare not even contemplate the consequences had this burnt a little longer.

This is the first I've heard of the issue, Google turned up your forum and now I wonder how many other Renaults are out there as potential disasters waiting to happen.?

Get yourself a large mug of tea and read through this thread from cover to cover - it explains everything we went through to get RUK to accept that this was a serious design fault and issue a recall (ermm "Quality Campaign"). They are fully aware of this problem and should offer something to sort you out. Alex Phelan no longer works as senior customer relations manager but he should have a replacement, that is the guy you are looking for. Sorry to see yet another one has gone up in smoke, can't believe the number that have slipped the net. Regards Dave

this thread has potentially saved not just time an effort, but the lives of me and my family. Im picking up a 2000 model 1.6 scenic tommorow (my first car) and after reading this thread I have already contacted my locak RUK Dealership and they are going to check whether or not it has been sorted already.

Thanks guys!! Seriously. :d

Hi JObrien, That was the purpose of fighting RUK tooth and nail to get them to accept the problem in the UK and resolve it. Hope you get clear feedback from the dealer. Watch for parallel right hand drive imports as they do not seem to appear on the Renault Database and therefore do not show up as requiring the work. If your logbook says new at first registration in the UK then you know it will be on the database. It's nice to get some feeback as we could have lost our youngest son to the incident. Appreciate your comments and Renaultforums for getting this article out there!

It turned out that my Scenic had not been sorted. I took it over to the RUK Dealership in Kettering (northamptonshire) and they took it straight in, changed it out and handed her back. Even gave her a free check over as I told them it was my first car.

I make a point of talking to anyone i see getting into a phase II scenic now and telling them to get the door checked with Renault. You'd be suprised at the amount of people that do not know that they are driving a potential time bomb.

I have a 2001 scenic that was not recalled but went up in flames yesterday 25/9/2012. It was used for the school run and then parked up at 16:30. Over 3 hours later at 19:45 we got a knock on the front door to say our car was on fire. The fire brigade afterwards said it appeared some wiring in the door had been the cause of the fire and asked where my mirror controls used to be on the door! Research on the internet has lead my here, to find that this appears to be a know fault with the door mirror controls. If the fire had got out of control and fuel tank exploded it would have taken out my house. The fire brigade said I was very lucky.

Are Renault UK likely to repair my car or give me any compensation or am I just wasting my time?

I informed my insurance company of the fire but said I did not wish to make a claim from them at this point until I had spoken to Renault UK as I believe Renault UK are at fault and should pay for the repairs. My Insurance and Renault UK both asked me to take it to a Renault Garage for an estimate and to identify the cause of the fire which I did ( yes I can still drive the car ). So now I have estimate of over £3000 for the repair, but now I am told because the car is uneconomic to repair ( at a Renault dealer) my Insurance has been cancelled ( no refund )and they have instructed a salvage company to collect my vehicle.
To say I am not happy about what they are trying to do is a bit of an understatement! Its the fact that they said (the car is uneconomic to repair) and not that the car is unroadworthy.
They then backtracked and said if I wish to reinsure the car with them I must get another MOT to prove it is safe to drive and will not accept it still has 6 months MOT to go?
To pass an MOT it would only require a new door card ( the plastic trim on the inside of the door ) as this would cover the exposed wires and any sharp edges. Opening windows and electric mirrors are not part of the MOT test.
After cleaning the windows and chipping the molten plastic off the door handle so I can open the door from the inside. MY garage had already agreed it was very smelly but it was safe to drive.

tbh I'd call the insurance company a bunch of (insert expletive)'s and search ebay for a replacement door.

Following a replacement of the window mechanism in my 2000 Scenic I noticed the mirror switch was burned out, I have removed the switch and taped up the wires so as not to catch fire, do you think RUK will replace the switch even though I have removed it myself? If not where can I get a new switch with wires?

Thanks.

This evening, after going out in the wagon at lunchtime in torrential rain, got into it tonight and there was an acrid burning smell,When i got in i had a quick google and coming across this place and this thread i was straight out and removed it.

You were Lucky that was only damage that was done. Are there any part numbers still visible on the switch so others may be able to identify which switches are likely to catch fire.
I replaced my wiring loom and switch from parts from a scrap yard but had no idea if this was a safe switch to use?

#469 ·
just to let you know i had x plate scenic, renault did a recall on these for replacement of these switches approx 7-9 years ago because of the fire risk if your vehicle wasnt currently registered with them by the owner at that time it probably wasnt done, check with renault and register your vehicle on " my renault " they will know if it was changed on the recall or not and may still help

#470 ·
The Scary thing is that not everyone Knows about this recall. I spoke to three other 1999-2003 scenic drivers that I came across on travels yesterday and only one of them had heard of the recall. Of the two others, one woman had owned her scenic for over 10 years and had not heard of it, and the other had 2 small children.

We need to publisize this more than just telling people when we see other scenic drivers.

Anyone that had a new door wiring loom fitted by Renault should check your driver wing mirror still heats when the rear window heat is on.

I got a Renault main dealer to fit a new wiring loom and switch or I thought that was what they were doing. On the first wiring loom one of the plugs had been cut off so it could not be fitted ( Why they did not notice this before asking for my car and wasting my day is another story ) The second wiring loom was also NOT new and had extra wires ? I then find they have to use reconditioned wiring looms as they no longer make these Scenics and this wiring loom is universal and will fill other models.

OK but I now find my wing mirror heater will not work because the second hand ( sorry reconditioned )wiring loom has one set of wires missing.

Any one else know it was nomal to fit second hand parts when going to a main dealer ?

#473 ·
Hi Scenic fire, Dealers should always use new parts, however I would suspect that something like the connectors inside the door may have started to become obsolete now hence the secondhand option. They should check something as basic as the heated mirror function though.

I am still making a point of speaking to everyone I see with a 99-03 model scenic and telling them about this problem, So far only one person out of the atleast 10 people I have spoken too has heard of the recall. And all of them have children.

This is something we need to publicise as Second or third (or in the case of my poor car, seventh) hand vehicles will have slipped through the net. And Even if they have been done with a previous owner, the point needs to be made that IT IS WORTH CHECKING.

Just found this and seem the picture on page 95, i know that this issue is with the Scenic however my Megane has the same switch, with a constant live regardless or the ignition and they both share many parts right?

So should i be concerned with this? is there an easy way to make the switch ignition live? so i don't have to worry when not in the car?

#480 ·
Well ive decided to run the live through a relay powered of the cig lighter, as far a i know the relay itself requires very little power to flick on so wont be putting any extra strain on the cig lighter wiring. Then that way i don't have to worry when not in the car. No idea why Renault didn't do this in the first place. Thanks for the heads up.

Passing on the message also....my sister has a Megane 1 cabrio, and my niece has a Megane 1 hatchback and (as someone else said the control and probably the switch are the same)

Also I have the same problem as someone with RUK not finding my registration number, but when I insured mine before I bought it last month they found it on the MID no problem and it wasn't imported

Have to go to the parts dept to pick up a scraper moulding so will stick my head round the door of the service dept and get mine checked

They make me :d because when I had my Megane 1 Coupe 2 litre it was listed on the RUK database as a 1.6 RXE - I needed a new headlamp unit as the lens was cracked and going just on the reg they ordered a single bulb unit and mine was a twin bulb unit!!! They got used to checking the actual car first before ordering anything!
