The stalk is probably common to cars of various spec levels. Some will not have the auto wipers so need the variable speed ring. With yours, having the auto function, there is a sensor mounted in the rear mirror housing, the more rain it detects on the screen the faster the wipe.

Yes but you can still set the rotary switch which does affect the pattern.

Any Scenic II fitted with auto wipers the rotary switch still functions.

If you read your instruction manual.

The sensor is in the screen.

The ring with tthe drops on is more of a "sensitivity" adjustment.

If you leave it on 1 drop for example - the wipers may not work quite so well in very light drizzle.
Turn it to 4 drops and they may start to work in next to no rain at all.

Try to experiment - leave the control on position 4 - if the wipers come on too much ,turn it to 3 and see if it makes a difference.

To be honest I can't really see the point of this function as the auto function seems to work pretty well anyway.

I am sure that as it has the same stalk as cars fitted without auto wipers they wanted it to do something.

As said - on cars without auto wipers, it does indeed alter the time interval between sweeps when on intermittant.

2010 Laguna III SportTourer Initiale Tom Tom.

Hi folks

Just an update. Following the suggestion above about the start-up noise being the dephaser, booked it in to the dealers (Platinum Bath). They knew of the problem, and whilst they were initially a bit reluctant to do that work just on my say-so (being an intermittent noise, of course it didn't do it when they had it) but they kept it in overnight "for tests" (sounds like the NHS !) and they did then replace the dephaser. No recurrence yet. So, many thanks for the input (esp. Ottoman for the suggestion), it seems to have helped solve the problem. And I was quite impressed with the way the dealer dealt with it (which is why I mentioned their name).

As far as the paintwork's concerned the best advice they could offer was to polish out the finger-prints, but no-one seems confident about how to prevent it recurring (telling the kids "Don't touch the car !" doesn't work).
