Renault Scenic II - Access the resistor pack in 5 mins.

I don't know if this has been posted before. I just managed to access the resistor pack in 5 mins, maybe less. Haynes reckon the dash top fascia needs to be removed, massive job. I avoided this.

I simply removed the two digital dash surrounds, then to the right of the digital display is quite a large hole. I shone a torch in here and there in front of my eyes was the connector for the resistor pack. Reached my arm in, disconnected it, have noticed slight burning on connector, so need to replace this. The connector has quite long cables, so reaches outside the dash for repair.

Removed resistor pack with torx screwdriver, appears to be OK, put all back together and is working now. But will need new loom section.

EDIT: See post 17 on for pics.

Hi,

I've also changed the thermal fuse in the resistor pack (SCENIC I, 2001).
Shortly after changing it, it blew again, so I started to look for the root cause.

I found out that it was because the pollen filter was filled with dirt - > no (or low) airflow at ventilator speed 1 and 2 - > the resisitor pack does not get coolen by the air flow -> the thermal fuse blows...
After having changed the thermal fuse again and vacuumed the pollen filter every was fine - and still is :)

Anders

Hi All,

Firstly, top thread. Since we got our scenic speed 4 has never worked. Finally got around to fixing it.
1) If speed 4 is not working, rule out the resistor pack, its a direct feed to the fan.
2) Brought new loom from e-bay
3) got to connector through directions here. I dont have small hands by any measure!!
4) Fit new loom. you need a crimp tool and a lighter to do the heat shrink. Old connector was burnt through on pin 4. The old connector had 5 wires, the new looom 6. Simply cut, crimp and heat shrink each wire as you go. There is no need to do anything with the last wire so I got a heat shrink cap and fitted it.
5) Test and fit everything back together.

Took me about 45 minutes as the wife needed the car..

Many thanks again.:d

Hi JD,

Just a quick question. I have also managed to get to the connector through to this fantastic thread.

On the connector I have also one connection that appears to have some burn/melt damage. However, when I "waggle" or press the connector in a touch (excuse the technical terminology!) and then turn the fans on they do start and run 1 through to 4.

Can I just buy the connector and simply reconnect the wires and pop that back on?

Cheers

Well, I still have a Scenic 53 for a couple of months! And decided to fix the ventilation, as the remaining speed packed up last week.

Thanks to everyone who posted before, I know most of you got rid of the scenic long ago, but thanks anyway!

Here I could remove the loom and resistor pack, but my arm is really too big and couldn't put it back. Thanks to Mrs who managed to sort it out, all works!

It seems that the air filter was completely clogged, and that must have contributed to the failure. When I tested the ventillation before putting the resistor pack in, a bunch of leaves and other stuff came flying out of the hole. pretty scary the amount of crap that was in there! I suggest you do the same (ie run the fan with heat at zero for a while to clear it)

Anyway, the scenic was not a bad car, apart from being a renault. Put 130K miles into mine, and now I'm waiting for the delivery of a BMW X3, can't wait! For a scenic in pretty good nick, I'm being offered... 600 quid. Thats less than the price of the metal.

BTW I had my car serviced every year (regardless of mileage) at renault, and I just realized that they dropped the air filter change 3 years ago, that explains pretty much all the problem I had since, I expect. Needless to say, I'll never buy a renault again -- not that they want me anyway, as they seem to want to sell electric matchboxes now -- they don't even do the Espace anymore... huh

Included is a pic of my air filter. The big leave was flat, covering most of it... thats one week past service + MOT BTW...

RENAULT GRAND SCENIC II 2.0 PETROL - CLIMATE CONTROL MODEL
HEATER BLOWER STOPPED FUNCTIONING
HOW TO FIX IT???? I can feel heat oozing out of the ducts so no heater problem

I tried finding the blower resistor in the dash. I removed the top and bottom fascia and the digital dashboard but still could not find that

Please advise me exact position of the resistor and whether just the resistor or the full loop needs to be replaced?

thanks ever so much

Hi Folks
Can I pass on my heartfelt thanks for an excellent site and (in particular) this post, which has saved me a vast amount of time and money.

The fault on my 2005 Scenic 1.9dCi was the loss of all but speed 4, and the module was located and removed from following the detailed instructions. Turns out it had been fixed previously by soldering the wires directy to the module, which solves the overheating plug issue. Mine had blown the thermal fuse, so off to Maplin's to invest £0.71 on a new one!

Thanks again.

ok. got the new spec loom. and the connectors that come with it. may be a dumb question but im assuming i strip the new loom and the old wiring. put both in the connector and it crushes together with pliers? is the plastic part like a heat shrink? or do u just crush the connector?

#281 ·
ok. just did the job. only needed to change the loom. honestly a numpty could do this job. hardest part was disconnecting the battery. surround comes off really easy. butter knife under top panel and push down. then in under front panel and lift up. unplug. cut the wires and match the wiring up to the new loom. theres one extra wire on the new loom that isnt needed. the kit from renault comes with crimp connectors that are shrinkable. then plug back in and reverse to re fit. whole job took 20 mins and i spent 10 on the battery. not worth 100s in labour. and its a 40 quid part.

Sussed it anyhow... Took approx £35 to do it all.
Hardest part for me was getting it back in to its hole under the dash without dropping the screw.

Old loom had 6 cables - new one 6 cables.

Read on here that some have 5 etc with spare one. Mine is an old 53 plate, so maybe the older ones had 6?

ebay - Loom £41.49 Resistor £32.70

£74 better than £350 that Renault quoted on Friday

Thanks guys,
This has helped a lot, we got a burning smell coming from behind the dash, we only have number 1 setting working at present and number 3 is intermittent.
The plug on the loom has melted; do I need to replace the resistor and the loom or just the loom?
Any help appreciated.

Just read all 60 pages and what a great help the photo's are.... but still have one question?

The fan on my 2006 1.6 Grand scenic stopped working on number 4 only, but only for a few days then it came back on. However, when we use it on position 4 only we get a burning smell. I suspect that is the melting around one pin.

Positions 1,2 & 3 work fine, so I suspect I only need the wiring loom.

My qustion is with regard to using a new wiring loom with the old resistor pack. I have read that the new loom spreads the load and saw from a photo that the new resistor pack has more pins.

Will the new wiring loom work with the old resistor pack? Am I right to be considering just getting the loom?

Evening, just 3 quick questions regarding my wifes 55 plate scenic, number 4 on the heater gave up the ghost about a year ago and I suspected the resistor pack then. Today the heater has packed in all together so after I checked the 40a fuse under the dash I have pulled the resistor pack with a view to swapping it out and to check the connectors/cables for heat damage (there was none)

1 does this sound like the resistor pack?
2 where does the black and red plug go to and how do I access it ?
3 lastly I put my meter across the thick red and black expecting to see 12v, but nothing, any ideas please.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Anyone able to answer my question please;

My qustion is with regard to using a new wiring loom with the old resistor*pack. I have read that the new loom spreads the load and saw from a photo that the new*resistor pack*has more pins.

So is it possible just to fit the new loom only?

Hello everyone great site. 06 scenic hole to access loom etc quite tight, not even sure I can get to the Torx to get the resistor pack out! New problem, on pulling the connector out to check for burning a small two wire connector on the same loom has come with it! Has anyone got any ideas what it is? Thanks
