Renault Scenic II - Bodywork - Tailgate Window - Useful ? Yes !

OK....am I missing the plot or what?

Ive got an opening tailgate window on my French Wheelie-Bin and I have tried to figure out how it is useful when the rear cover is left in place. With the cover in place you can just about slip a wet halibut down the gap in the folded back bit of the cover. You cant lift the full cover because it catches on the c-pillars (or is it d-pillars:confused: ). So the only use I can see is if I leave the cover out completely...true or false?

I know Im being a bit humerous, but seriously it has made me wonder how useful it was meant to be, especially with it being relatively high up.... unlike the Modus boot shute.:(

Hi,

My Scenic II does not have the opening tailgate window, but I can vary the height of the rear parcel shelf on the bottom fitting this leaves a large gap which I presume you would be able to lift the parcel shelf easier to slip items into the boot.

Hi Ottoman... thats a thought... I might have another play and try the shelf on the lower position and see if it contributes to the usefulness of the window. But I get the feeling I tried playing with it in that position in the past and I just found the whole thing a bit of a strain to lift an object up over the tailgate, through the window, and down through the gap onto the boot floor !!

Ive always snubbed the rear parcel shelf as being too flimsy to act as a REAL shelf and support any shopping/baggage/etc as I thought it bows/sags too easily.

I guess Im overcomplicating things maybe, probably the whole idea of the tailgate window is to use it when you cant lift the whole tailgate...end of story.

It just those darn Frenchies have been so inovative (imho) with the latest Scenic I just thought there might be more to it. Hence "missing the plot".

cheers

I quite like the feature on my Scenic. I can easily lift the tailgate, and then the parcel shelf and lift out the shopping that I know has gone everywhere instead of opening the boot and watching the eggs smash on the drive

 We like the opening tailgate window on the Laguna as well for these reasons, our drive slopes quite steeply and any lemonade/coke bottles that roll out of the back are "very very" fizzy by the time they crash into the garage door!
When we lost a bottle of wine, we decided enough was enough and HAD to have a car with an opening rear tailgate window - one bottle of wine was just too much to waste:d

My Clio shelf has dropped into the boot due to the weight of the aftermarket speakers hanging under it, I never would put stuff on the shelf anyway just in case of emergency stops etc. Dropping a bottle of wine on the ground is one thing having it in the back of the head is quite another.

I never ever put anything on the parcel shelf. The problem with the wine was whenever we opened the boot of the old car, any shopping that fell over would fall straight out of the back of the car onto the ground. Hence, now with the opening rear window I can pick up any offending precious bottles of wine before I open the main tailgate.

Its more about security of your boot contents really. If like me you carry lots of valuable spare parts for computers including a laptop, then it is great not to have to display to the world where you have your laptop.

Also find the window handy for carrying long items. Better than driving along with the whole door open and everything else falling out..
Good for carrying Christmas trees & the odd long item from time to time.

Both my Scenics have had the opening tailgate window. I think they are more a cool detail than being overly practical. Reminds me of the Hillman Imp rear window.

Hi, I'm a newbie.
Just got an 03 Scenic Fidji which has the tailgate/window that opens. I haven't got a handbook either, really annoying but I hope to get one soon. Can you only open the window from the button below the number plate light? Is there not a button inside? (which is where I was looking). Not had a Renault before so new to all the different gizmos. Thanks.

Tailgate does sound like a good idea to stop everything falling out when you open the boot door, I always thought a tailgate would have been a good idea on my last car but they didn't do them.
