I don't think they're anything to do with the mirror. It has two sensors, and both are built into the mirror itself. There's an obvious one in the bottom centre on the mirror side, and another one, offset to one side, on the reverse. The glass tints when there's bright light on the mirror side sensor, and little or no light on the other one. So if (during daylight hours) you stick your finger over the sensor on the rear of the mirror, the glass will tint.
