Maybe the power consumption is all relative - i.e. to achieve the same 'brightness' using conventional halogen lights, you would need to use (at least) 3 times the power, but xenons only need 2/3rds of that amount. They would then be 'cooler', but only compared on a level playing field, if you know what I mean. I think the phrase 'thermally efficient' (used previously) is spot on.
Now, if only someone could help me with the Vel Satis (hint, hint)....
