Heed well the wise words of Meganeman. You've got a "bad earth" problem somewhere in the rear light circuits. If by chance, it's not the connectors; follow the wires to their earth bolt and check that it's not corroded or loose.
Coilpacks are indeed a very common problem and a failing one would fit nicely with the chugging symptom. If that doesn't fix it, these 16v engines have also had cases of the heavy steel "crash protection box" that's clipped over the engine-mounted
, vibrating and chafing through the wiring. Was that one of your previously mentioned "loose bits?"
And you're absolutely right; 12mm spark plugs - why?
