If you're seeing four boxes, then the level's okay. Boxes are good, dashes are bad. If you get to the stage where they're all dashes, the oil level will be sitting just above the 'min' mark on the dipstick and you need to top up.

That's based on the way my 98 Lag did it. I'm assuming that the Scenic is similar.

i have 6 boxes and the word " oil " below that when i insert key before i start, it does go this ok?

ive just popped in a half litre of 10W40 in just in case
have i made a bad mistake?

ive only recently had this car, i bought it from my brother...i'll check to see when last service was
at a guess i'd say 6mths to 1yr, it didnt get much use by him
