You are right i think,
is held back by a seal on the driveshaft,
not the gaiter that does the grease.
Yes this is right had to replace a drive shaft last year because the cv joint was done. When i was putting the shaft back into the gear box i dropped the bloody thing damaging the seal.After that it leaked
from the box i had to replace the the seal then hay presto back on the road happy days
