On the Laguna 1, the passenger side driveshaft does have a gaitor on the gearbox side which holds the gearbox fluid in.... I know because mine went and it was had gearbox fuild everywhere. The gaitor costs about £45 from the stealers, but thats probably because it's not just a rubber gaitor but have a metal frame around it if I recall correctly.
The designin theory may possibly be the same on the Laguna 2?
Hi yes your right the gaiter i think does not prevent
from coming out but protects the seal from where the drive shaft enters the gear box there is also grease in this gaiter. If the the gaiter was to plit and lose its grease and dirt and small stones where to enter this area it may in time cause the seal to give in and start to loss
