Most cars pre-90's suffered from noticeable rust after a few years, and seeing cars driving around in the '60's & '70's it wasn't unusual to see cars with huge holes in the wings or valance panels and half the sills rotted out. David Isopon fibre-glass kits and perforated mesh & filler were the usual affordable fix back then
, except for the cowboys who repaired with the papier mache method
Your not wrong there I had a Hillman minx series 5 sill repaired by one guy who told me he had welded in a plate and then skimmed over with filler ..sound as a pound now he said when I picked it up..few years later when the filler cracked and fell out I could recycle enough news paper to start a chip shop..
