Exclamation Tomtom Go910 .... Virus infection ..... Act Now!

Well, I finally took the plunge and bought a TomTom Go910.

Looks great and right out the box its cool and sleek, but there is a hidden problem, it appears that all recent (Nov2006 on, according to the AV forums) TomTom Go910's have a VIRUS on the hard disk (factory installed ?)

It appears after you attempt to backup your TomTom to your hard disk it activates a hidden virus that infects your PC.
I've now spent the best part of 2 days getting rid of the virus from my PC, and have mailed TomTom support ...
here is their answer .....

This matter is currently under investigation as neither ‘copy.exe’ and another file ‘host.exe’ are TomTom files.

It would appear that the 'host' for these files lies dormant on an infected hard drive and become active when any mass storage device is connected to the USB port for the first time. It is safe to delete both these files.

Connect your unit to the PC, Open 'My Computer' and the TomTom will appear as a mass storage device. Double click the drive it appears as and explorer will open. You can then delete both of these files. We would then advise that you use programs such as Hitman Pro 2 to scan and clean your Harddrive. Then make another backup and delete the previous back, also from your recycle bin.

With Best Regards

The TomTom Customer Support Team

The infected files are as follows, locations are from my PC so your will be different depending where you installed TomTom HOME ......

Virus Name: Win32.Perlovga.a was found in the file
c:\documents and settings\dad\my documents\TomTom\Home\backups\go\backup01\storage\ copy.exe

Virus Name: Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Small.apl
c:\documents and settings\dad\my documents\TomTom\Home\backups\go\backup01\storage\ host.exe

If your a Go910 user Scan your PC now using an AV product .... TomTom mention one in their reply, but I used Zone Alarm's and AVG ...
I hope my PC is clean now ...... time will tell

Hope it helps .....

Why is it the older I get .... the better I think I was ?
