With the shoes assembled, the adjuster nuts are pretty hard to turn and normally only turn in one direction unless you release the lever that acts on the teeth of the nut.

It should turn to adjust the shoes tighter but the arm will need releasing from the nut to shorten the adjuster.

The nuts on screw type self adjusters normally need some help from a flat blade screwdriver.

On some cars, if you press the footbrake so that the shoes move apart slightly, the arm will move away from the nut to allow you to turn it in either direction.

In other words, you might not need new kit.
