I think you'd be better off going through the insurance if at all possible.
The bonnet is easily remedied,but if the roof is as bad as it sounds then filling it probably wouldn't be an option.....If you go for the cheap quote,then unfortunately you will end up with a cheap job,i.e not very good!.
Better still,get the little ba$tards parents to pay for the repair!
