Your description sounds a bit like the Scenic, the 'tongue' on top fits through a hole, or slot, in the vertical edge of the sill, it seems to work ok, you hang the jack from the sill then wind the jack downwards.
I haven't tried jacking the car with a load of fat people sitting in it but then that wouldn't be advisable anyway.. At least with the jack located in the slot like that, the car can't slide off it
Perhaps you have the wrong jack for your car, ie a jack with a tongue but no slots in the sills to locate it in? I certainly wouldn't consider cutting anything off this one
