The warning light is also connected to two other sensors,
1. Brake fluid level in the master cylinder.
2. Front brake pad thickness,will come on when pads are minimum thickness.
Have a check of these two.
Re your second point; there is a seperate warning light for the brake pads and I assumed this would be the light that would illuminate if the pads were low yet it does not?
