It certaintly does sound like the exhaust.
There is a possibility that the rear engine stabiliser is worn and it's causing the engine to tip excessively under acceleration.Why was the cat replaced?.Is it because it had broken?.If so,this could have happened as a consequence of a worn stabiliser.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
