this will just click in the solenoid

you will have to touch the positive jump lead to the solenoid connection AND the post where the battery positive cable etc was bolted on to bring in the solenoid and power the starter motor armeture

a couple of visual things to look for

there should be a cable on the starter motor body linking the solenoid and the motor and should be insulated with rubber --- has the rubber insulation burnt off due to excess heat --- is the cable burnt or blue indicating excess heat from a duff motor

all associated cables should be clean and secure on starter motor when fitted to vehicle

if the solenoid contacts are poor then they might just need replacing as when the solenoid clicks in the contacts work as a switch to bridge the positive connection inside the starter

carbon brushes can burn out and wreck the commutator on the motor causied by heat overload if excess turning of engine
is done for example a diesel engine with the glow plugs inop needing the engine turned over for at least 10 secs everytime
