Well so much for inspired guesswork
Apologies but at least one thing is discounted.
Ignoring first unit filled with water it would seem that there is a fault on the car rather then the units. But I'd never discount even new parts not being faulty.
I rather think following Micky's advice and getting a Can Clip on it may be best.
Could be set up in the units or a sensor in your motor.
Renault have the correct kit but I'm not certain the desire to help set up second hand units. And will be expensive for a diagnostic.
Independants may or not have the knowledge or kit that will access these things. And not all Can Clips are created equal.
Talk to whoever first before commiting to time or money.
