I changed the starter today and now my car starts fine. It took ages though as I was on my own (not reconmended as follows).
For anyone who is considering replacing their starter motor on their own I found the job really does needs 2 people when securing the starter to the car. One person to hold the starter in place when under the car and someone else to insert the bolts from under the bonet.
As I was on my own I had to ballance the starter in place by lying on the ground under the car, then quickly, before the starter fell, move to under the bonet to try and gently screw the 3 bolts into the new starter. Only thing was, because there was nobody to hold the starter the pressure from the bolts trying to be inserted pushed the starter and it fell onto the drive shaft. SO SO annoying and time consuming.
Good luck and have a friend handy.
