If it has coolant left in the header after it cools down, it should be ok.
There are always signs of fuel or
in the water when your gasket blows.
Only fill your header tank up to the marker to start with. The expansion is quite considerable considering that what you put into it is probably at almost freezing temperature so will be overly dense. Once heated, it can spit out a litre or more if it had been filled to the top. Your header should be no more than about half full so check the marker line.
I have to add that it is curious why the previous owner or the vendor garage removed the stat. Could it be they knew there was a problem but didn't want the buyer to find oiut until he was well on his way home?
