There's a little more to the PDIX than initially meets the eye. I believe it'll play just about anything you throw at it, provided it's on a CD or DVD. There's absolutely nothing to stop you from sticking 4.7Gb of MP3 files on a DVD and using it as an MP3 player. It'll run as a JPEG photo viewer too and shouldn't have any problems with MPG and most AVI files. It won't do the TV or games, but there's nowt worth watching on the terrestrial channels anyway, and you could always buy them a PSP each and probably still be saving money!
As for the remote, I think the actual interface may be tricky to find, but the wiring for the central locking switch in the centre console is a doddle to get to, and the switch lights up when the doors are locked.
Of course, if you have automatic locking activated, then the doors are going to lock again when you drive away (and power off your system) so what you really need is something that effectively closes the power switch for a second or so when the central locking light goes off, and which closes the hibernate switch for a second or so when the central locking light comes on, but only if the ignition is turned off.
You could easily acheve this using simple enough logic circuits. A couple of 555 timers, a flip-flop or two and (if you're going to be sensible) some opto-isolators would probably do the trick.
