Things to check
Anything for MOT. Any major deal breakers on that and anything else you put in is wasted money. So I'd be looking at that first and with your mate in the trade, ideal to get him to go over it and advise.
Clutch bleed and as Noel said, fingers crossed its not the slave. I think I've read on here that the slaves can suck air and cause problems without leaking so maybe livable with. A search on clutches and problems will give lots more info.
Timing belt is the other main area. If in doubt change or run the risk and know you've got a scrap engine sooner or later. Pays ya money and takes your pick.
Auxiliary belt is probably worth changing (with tensioner) if you are keeping the car as it seems they can take out timing if they go. Cheap insurance.
