I'm afraid I have to agree with your mechanic.
I think it was just coincidence,and if your car was not getting fuel to the cylinders for some reason the toxic fume light wouldn't come on as it detects excessive amounts of unburnt fuel going through the cat and if it was a misfire caused by fuel starvation then there wouldn't be any excess fuel.The
pack is really the only explaination for your troubles.(Sorry!
