Since everyone seems to have diesels, I'll put the case for the petrol.
I have had a 1999(v) reg 2.0 16v RT Grande petrol since July 2005.
I've put 20,000 miles on it and it has averaged 30mpg.

Servicing costs are around 500/year at a main dealer.
Tyres last 18,000 miles front, 36,000 miles rear and cost 40 each.

I get the irritating airbag warning periodically, but a quick jiggle of the under seat wires and it goes away.
It had a new petrol tank a year ago, the old one was warped, cost 500.

It is a big old bus and can carry 7 six foot tall adults and their luggage. It does not lack power to do this (which surprised me at first, because it is 'only' a 2.0L).

Every day driving is easy enough, it has taken the whole family round 3,000 miles of France on one holiday and regularly takes me and my dogs up the woods.

It has never broken down and starts first time.

If you are a high milage user consider the diesel, otherwise the petrol is just fine.

I do find the stereo remote control annoying, you have to locate it before you can turn it off, not easy when the dreaded teenagers have been in the car.
