Haven't noticed a "common problem" with the speedos. It is however, common for all car speedos to read slightly high.
We have a Tom Tom gps system via anHP ipaq and no matter what car we use it in ( our lag,Pug,old Picasso, old Focus & in-laws merc) the car speedo is always approx 3mph higher than the gps indicates at 70mph. So whilst car says 73mph we are only going 70mph.

Another reason, but unlikely, for your speedo to be out is the wrong size/profile tyres being fitted. I'm not sure if/how the speedo can be recalibrated.
Quickest and easiest/cheapest way to check acuracy would be 1 - check correct tyres and 2 - get hold of a portable gps system.
Otherwise its a trip to a dealer or specialist.
