Disconnecting door lock from handle

I need to remove the driver's door lock on my Scenic 1 phase 2. All that stops me is the rod connecting it to the outer handle (and the fact that I can't see how to disconnect it). What's the trick? How is it fastened? Which end needs to come off, and will it ever go back?

Do I need to interfere with the window guide? It may give me more space but it might just cause more aggro.

The problem is that the door is not locking correctly. The solenoid sounds OK but firstly it would not unlock from the outside and now it won't lock.
