Hi all, posting my pics following an EGR overhaul on my 2006 plate Scenic Grand 1.9 DCi. Engine is the F9Q version 80 E I think?

**Please note I changed my glow plugs at the same time if this does not apply ignore some of the sections!**

Ok first things 1st before you even start make sure you have an ex torx socket if like my engine you have the external torx bolts on the EGR pipe, mine was an 8mm socket

The rest just involves your run of the mill spanner and socket set and a torx screwdriver set

I bought some carb cleaner in advance, take your pick there are many to choose from, i also had a little stiff brush (old toothbrush will do)

Disconnect battery

Remove the cover off car to expose the shroud covering your glow plugs etc (sorry if some of the terminology is not exact, i'm not a mechanic:d)

There are several things that I removed in order to make life easier and get better access, choose whatever suits you best.

Undo the plastic screws covering windscreen shroud
10mm plastc nuts and 2 x torx screws at each end
Remove the rubber strip and rubber stops at each end.

Next remove the 1st piece of plastic shroud covering the windscreen wipers

Ok now pop of the three covers that hide the nuts securing the windcreen wipers, unscrew and remove, i didn't need a puller for mine they came off with ease.

I also removed the plastic covers in the corners

Remove wipers

Next its time to start removing the firewall panels

note the position of the bolts, it comes aprt in two sections, smaller panel to the right (for access to air filer box) and larger panel to the left, jiggle it a bit to get it out or remove the pipes to manifold and remove shroud over glow plugs whichever makes life easier

Once done you can fold the flexible pipe out of the way to remove the shroud over the glow plugs

Next I removed the two ex torx bolts from the EGR pipe

Then remove the 3 bolts holding the EGR in place, last one at rear near bottom, I used a 13mm spanner

Pretty carbed up!

So I cleaned it

OK not content with that, I wanted to check the motor, I took the cover off (more torx screws) checked the cogs (no broken teeth) and then placed two spade connectors on the motor to test it on the battery, it span fine so I knew it worked:d

I moved the cog by hand and the valve moved freely

Put it all back together and reassembled.

The valves cost in excess of £200.00 so for me it was worth checking and cleaning. Mine had stuck, it was burning loads of fuel, now closed:d

Hope this helps someone along the way

Have you noticed much of a difference to your fuel economy and driving experience since you did this. i'm doing mine because my economy has dropped off recently and hope to bring it back, also what mileage have you done. again thanks for the post and the replies

Hi Mike, wife was getting 24mpg around town and 30mpg on along run, now 36mpg around town and approx 48mpg on a long run. Cost us a fortune to run until we fixed this, still have the ' check injection' on dash with yellow service light, new glow plugs alll in. I have ordered a Renault clip diagnostic tool to reset the codes ( hopefully) car now has more power which you feel immediately when driving

An excellent post Chris - well done. It has been a great help as I intend to embark on cleaning a similar unit on my neighbours Lag II - maybe this weekend.

Thankfully access is a bit easier on the Lag.
I have never had the opportunity to dismantling this variant of EGR valve. From what I can discover the type you cleaned is made by Siemens-Evo whereas all my previous cleaning has been restricted to the Pierborg type. The latter being solenoid operated but the Siemens type is electric motor driven.

I have also discovered this type of EGR valve is also fitted to some Vauxhalls, Opels, and Nissans so your post is likely to be of great help to others. Although they may not be interchangeable between models due to different wiring configurations.

Just one other technical point. I take it the valve on the exhaust inlet side is of the rotating butterfly type.

Again many thanks indeed.

May I suggest the moderators make this post a sticky.

Mine is a laguna2 but after 06. The one i had before was easy to see as it was that Pierberg one. Not being a mechanic and what i see in the pics of the scenic, that silver pipe seems like one on mine between the turbo and air filter.
I have the big lite on saying 'Fault Fuel Injection'.
Checked all connections they seem ok.

Hi Chris

Took my Egr off today, looked just like yours. didnt take long just a shame about all the panels that need removing just to get to it! but all in all a satisfying effort. Many thanks for the post its nice to see whats involved before you actually do a job

Glad you got to it Mike, hope it sorts out your problems.

Emibobe - Wifes MPG was approx 24 -28mpg around town (awful) for a DCI You could hear a whoosing, hissing noise (could be mistaken for brakes rubbing on discs) as you drove around a built up area, I believe this was the air bypassing the turbo, poor on power.

Needless to say not good and had to be sorted, had the 'check injection' service light on Dash.

Hope that helps.

Hi Chris

Great post.

I only discovered that I may have a problem with the EGR this morning.

I dont know very much about engines but from my research I think it is an EGR and pressure boost solenoid (see symptoms below).

(I have a 03 Laguna 1.9 DCi. Noticed over the last month that the power was flickering when driving on motorway at around 60mph-70mph. Thought nothing of it until this morning. I started the car as normal. Noticed that the acceleration was quite poor. When I eventually got to about 40mph in 5th gear, the power more or less went i.e. I was depressing the accelerator but the engine was not responding and the car slowed down to a stop. The heater plugs alarm light was on on the dashboard. I also got an oil alarm light.

As I said, I am not particularly gifted at mechanics so do you think that I could clean out of the EGR valve and put in a new Boost Pressure Solenoid. )

How can you tell if it is this an EGR problem or a turbo problem? One garage that I called said that it could be either.

Thanks,
Eoghan

Hi eoghanhp
I think your symptoms are different to mine. I had the check injection fault on the dash, I also had the loss of power, the easiest way to check would be to wind down your passenger window, do you hear a whooshing noise that sounds like air bypassing the turbo, I hear mine in built up areas more as the sound is more prominent and can be heard more clearly, when the EGR shut on mine I could not hear this noise at all.

If I take my foot of acelerator and keep clutch down the noise stops, I only did this as I thought at first it was my brake discs rubbing against the pads, again it is a similar noise to this.

I never had the oil light on etc and car never stopped, it was just hesitant and lack of power and of course **** poor fuel economy.

Sounds like your may be something different? but again I'm not a mechanic.

Hope this helps

Thanks for getting back to me Chris. Unfortunately, the car is fecked. Turbo is gone and I am not putting another cent into the piece of ....

Keep up the helpful posts...plenty of renault owners will be needing them in the future!

Fantastic description and brilliant step by step instructions. I have got to the removing the fire plate panel out before but did not know which was the egr. (was looking for a long tubular type so had given up looking further. If the weather is nice this weekend guess what I'll be doing? I will keep you posted on how easy it is for a relative novice.

Nice guide ... unfortunately it seems the one on my Clio DCi is almost 100% different! Different design of EGR, plumbed into the engine differently, with wholly different access requirements. Wish I'd been taking pics as I'd gone along now to add in ... I've now got it mostly in bits. Might take snaps of the rebuild instead.

Hey ya Scott. There isn't a thread on the removal of the EGR in the MK2 megane... yet lol. I know in my megane which is an 04 1.9dci the EGR is quite hard to get at! It is right at the of the back of the engine and is a "U" shaped ridged tube!

hi all,

i have a renault scenic 1.9dci privlidge

i have low mpg, i get 28mpg in city driving, i fill tank up till it stops, i know i have about 60miles when near the reserve point, and after topping up display shows 410/420, so roufly im getting 350miles? from a full tank of £68pounds and around 43litres

i have had the car hooked up dignostics, nothing there, any other users out there with a 1.9dci what is yours like

my sister has a 1.5dci, which computer on dash shows 42mpg :D she drives ruff too,

anyhow today had the egr cleaned, even tough wasnt suffering much worse of egr issues, anyhow car seems to fly at the moment, noticed better pickup in first gear and 2nd will update regarding the mpg, as its been reset got to wait until it settles, but did go up to around 38ish, unsettled,

#29 ·
yep as my previous post, on dual carriage way and abit inside routes, i can get around 35mpg, mid range was 37 n highest after a long stretch could reach 38.7

but much better then 28mpg-25 i was getting before, :)

so if anyone is having any issues regarding the mpg, and nothing on diagnostic showing, just get the egr cleaned, hopefully it should solve it,

as i had brought the car like this, i didn't notice the different in pick up as much, i did think at one point but i thought i was being paranoid comparing it with a 1.5dci,

Give it a bash - takes a couple of hours and would reccomend gloves as it is quite a dirty job.

My problem was performance related, but generally egr valve cleanout never seems to do any harm, plus its cheaper than taking to a workshop and them suggesting all sorts of expensive things, thus is a good place to start!

I cleaned out my EGR Valve at the Weekend and it was pretty caked up so a good job done and it was thanks to this great guide but I do have one problem. One of the ex torx bolts on the EGR Pipe was in a pretty bad way (not sure if it's previously been worked on) and it eventually rounded and had a nightmare getting it off!!
The problem is that I haven't managed to screw it back on all the way due to lack of leverage and it's not fully home so will probably get a bit of leakage through the gasket.

Where can I get another one of these bolts from, is it a dealer job or will any hardware store do?

Cheers, Steve
