Clio unstable engine idle & Speed sensor location?

Hi everyone!

My clio has got an unstable idle. Its been going on for ages, though seemed to go away since last summer, and has been intermittent since.

What brought it on this time was I was turning down a street (lots of parked cars, only one can get down at a time etc) and there was an oncoming car so I had brake heavily to stop so the other car had space to pass.

So of course as I was pushing hard on the brake and then had to press down the clutch. I must of let the engine revs get too low as it ended up stalling. Thing is I never even felt the judder of it wanting to stall. It just cut smoothly. Its done this before last year, just a straight smooth cutt out. Maybe it was a smooth cutt as the clutch wasnt engadged. When you press down the clutch quickly it seems to make the idle jump low.

To get it to start again I had to apply gas to keep it running as it wouldnt keep itself idleing so I could set off again. It then follow to cutt out smoothly at the next traffic lights.

Now since then the idle seems to sit high, at about 1500revs, and occasionally drops itself back down to about 1000. Its not a smooth drop down, seems to jerk down from 2000.

What could this be ?

By the way, its a 1999 Clio 1.6Si

Also I have an intermitted speedometer that keeps giving a reading of zero at the worse of times...

I want to look for the speed sensor(not the tdc or crankshaft speed sensor, thats on the gearbox right?...) so I can inspect/clean/replace. Anyone know where I can find it ?

Currently in nizmo's garage:
Clio MK2 PH1 1.6SI

Re: Clio unstable engine idle & Speed sensor location?

I had erratic revs with my old V6 Laguna which turned out to be the coolant temperature sensor. Might be your issue but with so many sensors that could give the same effect you might be better getting it hooked up to a diagnostic machine to see if it can point you in the right direction.

Regarding the speedo sensor. My understanding is that they are mounted in the transmission! The TDC is located on the side of the engine block
