Laguna 2.0 16v petrol sounds like a diesel

Just purchased an '04' Laguna 2.0 16v Petrol but to listen to the engine you would think it to be a diesel. It was advertised saying that it would need a new air flow meter but we are at a loss to where it is located. We have located the throttle body and it has been removed and cleaned.

I plan to have a service done in a couple of weeks time as looking at the air filter and the oil it has not been done in a while.

Now would the air flow meter cause problems like cutting out at junctions and when coming down the gears and the engine idle speed dropping then returning to normal it seems like an intermittent problem so it may be solved by cleaning it or is it best to buy new.

Any help would be great thanks.

If it sounds like a diesel then I'd bet it needs a new depasher / dephaser solenoid, which means a change of timing belt too (as that has to come off to get at the dephaser unit) Im afraid - not cheap all in all mate.

The dephaser could also account for your other problem.

Seeing as you've just purchased the car (and assuming you bought it from a dealer) then take it back and demand they sort it out. All trade car sales come with at least 3 months warranty these days.

Re: Laguna 2.0 16v petrol sounds like a diesel

Can't return to the person I bought it from was sold as seen due to high mileage and this problem. Going to have to get a second hand dephaser for now just to keep me going until I can get a full replacement kit. See how it runs then and if the air flow meter needs doing as well.

I take it the dephaser is located on the side of the engine on the drivers side. I have had a look round the site and found a little guide to help us out but I am still unsure of what it does all I know is that its something to do with the timing.

I would also like to know where the airflow meter is just in case we need to replace it

Thanks for all the help so far. Sorry for all the questions but I am a novice at this but have two family mechanics waiting for the info

The dephaser sits on the cambelt end of the engine - left hand side as you look into the bonnet from the front of the car.

IIRC it got something to do with the VVT (variable valve timing). From what I can tell on the forums the dephaser being noisy wont cause any damage, it just sounds like a bag of spanners.

I imagine the air flow meter ( MAF ) will be inline with the air intake and have the air filter box attached to it.

The dephaser will sound like a bag of spanners because it is broken. I understand that if it is not fixed it will disintergrate, which is not ideal for the engine. Some members have welded the DP, with no issues.

I am assuming that this is the F4R VVT engine, which may not have a MAF . Certainly not one that looks like any I've seen.

I have been trying to find the source of my poor performing F4R engine for a while now, so will be following this post with interest.
