I'm not a high mileage driver and my megane 3 does about 5k a year. i had the first service done last year January at 5k miles and was told the service interval is after 18k or 2 years whichever comes first. Only done about 4k on it so far and the instrument panel doesnt display service due message but dealer called and left me a message saying service is due according to their records. are they assuming that i have done 18k miles in 1year? because its only been a year since my last service.

Also, how does the onboard computer determine when service is due? is it based on time and mileage? I read somewhere that some meganes have something that detects oil quality and might tell you earlier if service is due.

It is well known in the motor trade that Renaults recommended 18,000 mile service intervals are far too long.

Anyone with experience of driving Renaults will insist on an engine oil and filter change at least every 9,000 miles. In fact on some of the newer models renault recommend 10K intervals or each year whichever comes first. On some models the service reminder is time related to 12 months.

If you are doing short journeys then I would definitely recommend on an oil and filter change at least every 12 months.

The "alarm" will go off at about 20 months if the mileage isnt reached.
Mine was one year or 12k miles/20k km if you like.
The alarm went off at 10 months..I got it serviced at 11 months.
Its now set at 2years /20k km/ whichever comes first.
If you wish to shorten the service interval, thas up to you,but it wont affect guarantee.
One thing is the 3 year corrosion warranty.
A check has to be done every year or renault wont honour it ,Ive heard.
Sort of makes a mockery of a possible 2 year initial service interval.

The service interval for cambelts on a "badboys"..ie driven by non owners/company cars meg 3 1.5 dci is 50k max/3 years.
Thats on the "its a hard knock life"/"its not my car" principle.
The official renault position is 100k miles and since my last service check had 4 years max for cambelt change stamped across it diagonally :).even if you have a mileage of 20k a year after 4 years (the current UK from new guarantee period I think?).You wont have reached the official mileage limit, but will still have to rely on renault goodwill if things go pearshaped.
For the 3 year corrosion check ,Ive been informed,in writing that the "free car check"(read "we look for stuff that will generate some service cash").brakes,wipers.. etc etc will cover the corrosion warranty check, gotta be done every year thing.
On a free car check, make sure you have your fluids topped up washer bottle included, other wise they will charge you outside of "free",
No worries tho..renault are going to 5 year guarantee..which is better than my last car, late 90's which had 1 year even tho some were starting to offer 3 years, and I had to rely on "charity customer services" ..the salesman informed me ,the maker would go 2-3 years if something really nasty happened.
Thx massa
