Follow the wires from the cooling fan motor and it should lead you to it....normally the thermostatic switch is located on the radiator. The other coolant sensor on the engine is for the temperature gauge or ngine management unit.

So does coolent sensor have nothing to do with fan kicking is, as temperature gauge is working fine I think.
so is there some other switch on radiator it could be,
when car is stood still fan is not kicking in temp is getting to 4 bars high, and doesn't appear to go any higher , and fan doesn't kick in.

The coolant sensor gives a signal to the fuel injection computer (ECU)
This ECU uses the information to decide when to switch the radiator fan on.

If you run the engine and unplug the coolant sensor, the ECU should permanantly run the fan as a default setting due to loss of coolant temperature signal.
Doing this may throw up a fault code that might clear on it's own or need to be cleared with diagnostic equipment.

The coolant temp sensor on your car is usually fitted to front right hand corner of the cylinder head, as you look from front of car.

very few petrol Renaults after year 2000 will have radiator mounted fan switch.

If doing it yourself-

Make sure the engine is cool.
Remove the coolant cap to relieve any pressure in the system then refit cap.
Unscrew old one and quickly fit new sensor.
Do it quick and you shouldn't loose much coolant.
Put a rag under it to catch any spillage.

There will be a fuse and a relay for the fan located in the engine bay fuse box.
Not sure on the layout in your car so start with checking fuses.
Might be worth posting a good picture if you can.

Might be worth disconnecting and testing the fan directly off a battery to make sure it works.

Had this problem with daughters 2004 1.2 Clio. Cooling fan not kicking in. Took a while to sort but managed it in the end.
I did refer to this forum and want to add what I have found with some pics. I have used the forum before, found it a Godsend and want to give something back.

The issues were..

Cooling fan wont kick in..

Pulling the coolant temp sensor leads off did NOT automatically put the fan in constant mode.

No earth in wire to fan.

Remedy. (after much trial and error)

1.) Cooling fan tested by 2 wires to terminal direct from battery - working.

2.) There is a GREEN and a BLACK wire to the fan, the BLACK is the earth. New earth created and spliced into this wire, making the earth wire good.

3.) Put a meter on the GREEN wire (on the ohms setting) and found the other end of this GREEN wire by checking each terminal of the board containing the relays (next to the battery and fuses in the engine compartment).
I had found NOTHING anywhere (forums/Haynes manual etc) which said where the relay was.
On this car there were 3 small relays and one large, all brown in colour. The relay in question was the 3rd small one away from the engine.

4.) Obtained and fitted new relay. Tested system by running car and unplugging leads from the temp sensor (3 pin plug on engine block, gearbox end). This caused the fan to start.
Re connected the 3 pin plug and ran engine till hot and the fan did kick in.

5.) Thank F for that!

Hope my findings will help! The other contributors certainly did.

For this fix all that was needed was a multimeter to check the wiring..

The relay in question is the black one (new).
