How to: Change Scenic I Accelerator Cable

I changed the accelerator cable on my Scenic yesterday so thought I'd take pictures as I went. Hope it's useful.

You need some good string, pliers, torx T-30 and a torch.

1) Unhook the existing cable end from the top of the accelerator peddle. You need to use pliers to squash the little plastic wings on the clip so that it will go backwards through the hole.

2) Pull the plastic clip off the end of the cable. Some might not come off, but if it does you don't want it to do so now, not later.

3) Unhook the other end of the cable from the throttle leaver at the back top of the engine. You need to turn the cable upwards and slide it out sideways. If you look close there is a little slit in the lever where the cable can slide out with the lug on the end. At this point use the torch to see where the cable goes through into the car.

4) Keep the metal clip. You need it for the new cable if it didn't come with one.

5) Inside the car you can pull the end of the cable inside a bit more for easy access and tie your string to it. Do this well, because the string will help you pull the new cable back in. Tie the other end of the string to the break pedal.

6) Take off the cable clip on the left side of the engine using a Torx T-30 bit. Keep the clip somewhere safe.

7) Pull the cable into the engine bay. The string will come with it so you can find the hole again.

8) Inside the car you can see the hole above the accelerator pedal where light is now coming in. If it didn't come out with the cable you need to push the rubber grommet out of the hole so it's just bare metal.

9) Tie the string to the new cable. You can see the cable has a rubber grommet, a plastic plug that goes into it and then a rubber cover.

10) Pull the cable through the hole with the string from inside the car. Do it carefully so it doesn't catch on stuff.

11) Go the the outside of the car and push the first rubber gromet into the hole. The gromet is slightly larger than the hole so it can be tricky to get it all the way in. Be patient and keep at it. You will get it there eventually. You can check if it is all the way in from the side of the car. Actually I've already done this in the image above.

The rest is basically the reverse of what you did already.

12) Push the cable with its plastic plug into the hole and also push the rubber cover all the way up. That's the hard work done!

13) Connect the new cable to the pedal.

14) Put the cable clip on and fix it to the left side of the engine using the T-30 bit.

15) Put the cable through the hole near the throttle lever and put the lug in the lever. It might be a little stiff so wiggle it around and maybe use pliers to get the cable turned around in the lever so it goes straight.

16) Adjust the length of the new cable by moving the clip on the ridged part. I tied a bit of string around the clip to hold it stronger or if I mashed the pedal to the floor it would sometimes move.

this is helpful but I want to do the same thing and cant even get started:

How do you get the airbox off to get to the back of the engine ?

I cant see where the cable comes out of the bulkhead - there simply is no room ? can you let me know where it comes out ? how do you get to it ?

I have the broken cable and end in the footwell and simply want to replace the accelerator cable but you dont say how you access the parts in the engine bay ?

I changed the cable on my Scenic last week I did not need to remove the airfilter or anything else cable is best fed through from the footwell and maybe easier if there are two of you so that one pushes cable through and one catches it in the engine bay. I am no mechanic but managed this with minimal cursing and no injuries.

Don't think so. IIRC all in the drivers footwell & bonnet.
Long time since I had a Mk1

i can try that but i just bought this:

im not sure what to do with these, any help?

theres the metal cable, do i feed this through the thin white plastic tube, then feed that through the thin black one, then feed those through the footwell, then through the thick black tube then attach to the engine at the top?

at the ends:
one end has that white plastic clip which goes on to the pedal, but not sure about the other end, theres lots of bits and bobs

If it's only the inner that's gone. Why not feed the new inner into the old outer, left where it is. Worked for me years ago on a Peugeot.

Yes, in case it helps anyone else:

Renault Megane 1.6 16V sports coupe 1999

Just buy the cable (or if not much difference in price buy the kit). I bought the universal kit for £13

Took me a while to realise that I should just leave the existing outer tubes in place (would have been a pain to remove otherwise).

Then remove the old cable and feed new one through. Then screw on the head piece on the end. Cut cable to right length and slot into the thingy at the top that controls the gas. I think you can play with the tautness by turning the black piece that has screw-features on surface

(excuse lack of proper nomenclature)

Takes about 5-10mins.
