Engine light flashing & car shuddering.

Hi I have a 2004 Clio dynamic, last night it started shuddering & engine light flashing. I have put engine oil in but it's still doing it. Has anyone any ideas what it might be? I hate going to a garage without some idea what's causing the problem because I feel the mechanic treats me as an idiot because I am a woman.

The reason I ask is that too much oil can damage an engine, as can insufficient.

Did you check the level via the dipstick with the car parked on a flat surface and after a reasonable period (with the engine switched off) to let the oil drain back into the sump, to obtain an accurate reading?

Is the car a petrol or diesel? If it is a petrol, the symptoms you have described could also be due to a failing coil pack causing a misfire.

I'm more than a bit concerned with the oil level - what is it reading now?

Sorry for all the questions.

It was at minimum last night, I parked the car on the flat all night, checked the oil again this morning, it was still at minimum. It's now just below maximum, it's still parked on the flat.
It's a petrol car, someone suggested that maybe because I was low on petrol that dirt has come up and is causing the problem?
If its a failing coil pack, is that a big job to repair? Is it an expensive one?

A coil pack is fairly straightforward to swap over (if that is what it is).

It may be an idea to look for someone in your area with a diagnostic scanner who can read the various fault codes which are present.

Most businesses would be sub-£50 for this, and they will come to you.

This is much cheaper than simply replacing parts & paying for labour in the hope of finding the cause of the issue.

If you search for auto-electrician, then look for those with diagnostic equipment, that will help you find someone who won't rip you off.

By all means, report back their findings and projected cost of repair.

Thank you so much guys. It was great to walk upto my mechanic and say I'm nearly sure it's the coil pack that needs replacing, can you check it. Yes that's what needs doing, he is doing it tomorrow for me, €75 to buy it and €40 to fit. I will be checking on here in future if I need help. Thanks again from a very very happy Irish Cailin :)

Nice one, you're welcome.

Thanks for giving us the feedback.

P.S. keep an eye on the fluid levels under the bonnet - you can't rely on a warning message as a safety net.
