Kangoo Ignition coil


Mother-in-law's Kangoo had a sulk on saturday and the RAC dude (a former Renault dealship *technician) knew what it was straight off and sure enough it was a coil ... so I duly replaced this on Sunday; however having changed one, it is advisable to change the others as they are obviously of the same vintage?

Also as this appears to be a "known" issue, has anyone experienced any "goodwill" with replacements from Dealers as she's not exactly loaded and the Kangoo + wheelchair are her only means of transport.

(*Technician... wtf... when I worked in a garage i was a mechanic :P )

There are some threads about dealerships giving away coils .

I got told off a bit here for saying their not mechanics now there just fitters.

I think the coils are just hit and miss, some last forever some go the next day.

A problem well stated is a problem half solved !
Currently in davesss's garage:
2002 Laguna Sports Tourer 1.8 Dynamique Moondust VF1KGOB, Fiat Siecento Micheal Schumaker, Kawasaki KLE M/Cycle and a cheap Mountain Bike.

Yes Renault have picked up the tab on coil repacements, depending on mileage etc it seems to be very hit and miss as some get the full amount others get a contribution others get SFA no rhyme or reason why, I would contact RCS and sound them out about it.

Apparently Renault were supplied with a faulty batch of coils and these have a certain date stamp on them.If these cause problems after the car is out of warranty,then they will be repalced FOC.The numbers effected are posted on the forum somwhere,so if you search for 'Pencil Coils ',you should eventually come across the information.

BUT,from my experience,Renault saying that they have been supplied with one faulty batch is a bit rich!.I have replaced pencil coils on many different Renaults of varying ages,including my own car..The coils give problems,full stop,wether they are from a certain batch,have a certain coloured top or anything else doesn't make a blind bit of difference!.

Changing the spark plugs more regularly than suggested adds to coil life expectancy,as does using genuine plugs.The resistance in the plug is crucial,and even a slightly high resistance in a plug can effect coil behaviour.

Coils are available aftermarket,so your not stuck with genuine prices. Coils made by a company called Beru are far more reliable than the Sagem(genuine) ones and are cheaper.I always recommend people change them in sets,as if one gives problems,the others are more or less guaranteed to follow at regular intervals,but I must admit when it comes to my own car,I don't practice what I preach!.I have changed one,and keep a spare one with me,together with a T30 torx screwdriver so I can swap it over if I have problems,no matter where I am!.They always pack up at the worst possible moment!

I hope you find my ramblings interesting....

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
