Hello,

I have just been given a quote to change my timing belt of Renault in Lancaster £369 or £580odd with the water pump. This seems rather expensive.

Anyway my local garage where I have happily gotten all the work done on my previous car has quoted me £120 for labour and I supply my own parts.

Where is the cheapest place for quality parts for my laguna?, I have only ever gone to a local motor factor NTS or Euro-car-parts before. Perferably somewhere I can order online and get delivered to work. The car is a 1.8 v16 petrol engine, I think all the parts I need are:

Cambelt
Aux drive belt
Tensioner kit
Cam end caps

I’ve read its best to do the water pump too as it’s virtually zero labour and just the cost of the part, is this correct? In which case ill just need a water pump?

Cheers

Hi Brown - you are right the extra work involved in fitting a new water pump when getting this work done is minimal. Sometimes the belt is available with new pulleys in a kit. Depending on the age and mileage of the car it may also be worthwhile fitting a new auxilary belt tensioner whilst you are at it. I had my Laguna II Dci diesel done recently and I was able to source all the stuff from a local motor factors for around £112 including anti-freeze and a local garage charged me £60 labour. Try the link below as they may have a local branch and if you go in person you may be able to haggle a discount.:)

GSF Car Parts, cheap car parts direct to you

Hi madnoe, sorry to jump on the thread but cold you possibly post the full list of parts you ordered for a cambelt change as mine needs doing (nearly 72k eek). THe car is going into renault on Friday for a couple of unrelated matters, how much would they charge to do the cambelt while they've got it? If it's going to be loads I'll take it to an indy with all the parts.
Anyway, would appreciate the list :) with part numbers if you have them, I drive a 1.9 dci as well

Cheers

Hi Hitby - sit down before you ask Renault for a price and take a roll of toilet paper with you as I've heard quotes of £350 upwards.:d I did not fit Renault spares but got them locally from a motor factors. On my Laguna II Dci I fitted as shown below
1. Timing belt kit
2. Water pump
3. Auxilary belt
4. 3 litres of anti-freeze

I suggest you make enquiries about for a independent garage as you wouldn't want a bad job.:)

Hi Brown my mistake - very sorry was thinking of a my own motta - I suggest you email them giving full details of your car and see what they can provide as they may be able to do a special offer if your order is over a certain amount. Best to double check - no point in waiting until the job is being done and find you have the wrong stuff. Apart from GSF ar etheir any other motor factors in your area.:)

Just took mine to a reputable independent, they're doing the cambelt, auxiliary belt, fitting a water pump (but I bought the part for 42quid from a local dealer) and giving it it's 72k service for 370 inc vat, I think that's reasonable considering the stealers wanted 390 to just do the cambelt. Sound good to you?

Cheers

I found a well reconmended independent here in lancaster, wanted £215 for timing/aux belts or 320 including water pump. He said the water pump isn't driven of the timing belt so theres no real need to renew it so I decided to leave it - moneys a bit tight...

Just phoned to go and collect it and he said it wont be ready till tomorrow now :S he's having trouble sources an oil seal for the camsheft/pully :S didnt think there was an oil seal to replace...

hi graham

why do you need to remove the crankshaft pulley?
unless really necassary i wouldnt touch it, as they tend to be floating (ie. not locked).
have you checked the haynes manual for strip down details?
you shouldnt touch the crankshaft pulley for a timing belt service anyway.

details on how to do a renault timing belt correctly are on the site or online somewhere, do a search.

Just had my Laguna II 1.8 serviced and was told that I should have the cam belt & water pump changed.

It's a 03 plate with 32,000 miles on the clock but was told the cam belt needs replacing either after 6 years or 70,000 miles. Agreed to have the work done but made the mistake of not getting a quote thinking it would cost around £350.

Received a bill for £488 to supply & fit cam belt kit, water pump, auxiliary belt, replace anti freeze and bottom pulley.

The labour seemed very reasonable at £158 but the parts came to £329, which seemed fairly high with the bottom pulley, which I take to be the crankshaft pulley at £171.

The mechanic told me that when he stripped the car down that the pulley was split in two and needed to be replaced. He said that it was bonded together and the bond had failed.

Is this a common fault with the crankshaft pulley and do you think that I have been charged a fair price?

Any comments would be appreciated ....

It looks like a good price in my view. The average price is around £350 to £450 for replacing the timing belt, etc, on its own
I estimate the cost of the parts minus the pulley at around £160 or so.
Labour time is around 3-4 hours so at £50 an hour the price would be about right. Quite a keen price in my opinion.;)

Not as keen as 3 years ago when you had yours done :d

As I mentioned I thought the labour charges were fair. However the pulley seemed a bit pricey at £171? especially when all the other parts came to a total of £157. I appreciate you have to have a mark up on parts supplied but this was an unexpected cost and added to the cost of the job.

I was more interested in the fact if failure of the crankshaft pulley was a common fault on Lagunas and what the average cost of a crankshaft pulley is?
