Clio gear selector seal leak

Hi forum regulars,

I'm new to the site and I was hoping someone with a bit of mechanical knowhow could help me.

My sister bought a clio sport 172 recently and I noticed an oil leak from the gear box. I traced it to the gear selector seal. I have bought the replacement seal but would like any tips or suggestions if anyone has done this before. I seems to me that I need to pull the gear box to left side of the car so that i can disconnect the gear selector and replace the seal.

Does this seem retarded to anyone else? Why couldn't there be a bolt that holds the linkage in place, so that changing the seal only requires removal of the selector arm from outside the gearbox.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to a better quality seal perhaps or configuration as I can see this seal breaking again as it is a seal/bush for the selector arm and takes most of the load when you shift. Renault have really let themselves down with the design of this part.

Cheers,

Tom

Are you 100% sure its from the gearbox seal?

if so it'd probably be best to get it done at a place with ramps. where abouts are you in the UK?

GDI out at Bedford can do the work for you no problem as they specialise in the R-sports.

Google GDI tuning

I looked a day after I cleaned the everything under the car and when I squeezed the little rubber boot that sits between the gearbox and selector, the oil that collected in there squirted out. So I am 100% that the leak is from the gearbox selector seal. The way its connected is such that removal of the gearbox would most probably be required. (to gain access to replace the seal)

As to which part of UK I am in, the South Eastern colony I like to call Australia. I am still waiting for activation on the Australian Renault forum so I thought I'd post here. I went to a used Renault dealer and the 3 clio's I looked at had a leak from the same location.

Cheers

Ah thats a bit of a mission from AU to Bedford then to get it fixed. lol

Ok then try dropping Andy at GDI a mail then and he might be able to shed some light on what / how to fix the seal.

Include some pics and tell him that you spoke to James with the 182 with "CLIO UK" as the reg plate.

Top guys there and they do a lot of specialist work on the RS range
