Hi
My Scenic is going in for service next week at a Renault main dealer - They suggest I have the cam belt replaced at the same time.
The car will be 5 years old in October, but the mileage is only approx 32k. Can anyone advise me if this is the normal age for replacement.
thanks

I would definitely have it done when approaching 5 yrs old. I think someone said recently that he got quotes from a dealer for £1100 or from an independent for £500+. Can't remember which car though.

A cambelt break is invariably a very expensive event. You can have it done by an independent now without invalidating your warranty, so it might be worth shopping around first.

Yep would agree with Vass here shop around find a good independant with some Renault experiance.

Some recommend changing the water pump at the same time.

Ensure any garage quoting for the work uses good quality parts and fit a complete belt kit, change all the belts at the time.

Do a Forums search input - Timing belt change and it should throw up some useful info for you.

Just had my Scenic II serviced at a dealer. Got a price from 2 dealers first. 72K service + cambelt.

First dealer wanted £249 for the service, and £460 for the cambelt change.

Second dealer wanted £375 for the service and £400 for the cambelt change.

Both agreed to do both for £700. One said that the "Renault book price" was £950. Apparently it's an engine-out job.

I ended up having to pay £850, as the water pump needed changing too.

Next time, I want to find a good independant garage, as I'm sure it will be half the price. Also, reading the Haynes manual, they suggest 36K miles for a cambelt change, especially if you do lots of short journeys.

Your garage should have told you beforehand that Renault recommend that the pump, auxiliary belts and tensioners are changed at the same time as the cambelt. Usually they give you a quote but their internal paperwork lists (beforehand) a load of stuff that you will be telephoned about. They will tell you you can choose to do or not do these extras (but they advocate doing them and scare the tish out of you that something majorly bad will happen to your car or your mother-in-law if you elect not to).

My independent garage quoted me £400 for just the cambelt (if I remember rightly) but said I should change the rest of the kit to avoid having to take the engine asunder again if one of the bits decided to go belly-up.

I thought it was only the Espace that had to have the engine out for a cambelt change. I don't think this is the case for the scenics.
