Re: piston ring gone on my renault traffic 1.9 dci

Hello, I'm new to this forum,
I'm at my wits end with my van and would appreciate if anyone can help,

A few months ago I had load of work done on my van the garage uncovered quite a few problems due to someone drilling through the cylinder head this is cutting a long story short.

Here is a list of things I had to have done:
Cambelt and water pump
New cylinder head and head set
4 glow plugs
2x diesel injectors, new manifold studs and nuts,
Plus a few other bits that are not related to the engine,
Costing just short of 1400,

Van was ok for about a couple of months,
Then it started to make a sqealing noise,
New turbo and inter cooler,

Eventually got it back, after taking it back a couple of times due to manifold hose I think that's wot it is called? Causing it to sound like a tank,

I thought nothing else could go wrong with it, how wrong I was! About a month later,

Driving along and started to lose power, with black smoke behind me got it of road, was unable to turn engine off! It was revving uncontrollably I even managed to stall the thing,

Towed back to same garage, they eventually take it apart ,they say bottom end has gone,
They showed me, looks like the pisten has clashed with the valve on the new cylinder head? That's wot I can see anyway, I'm not a mechanic just a heating engineer,

I'm starting to get suspicious As no one could explain why this had happened,
Piston ring has gone? That's all I got,

However went in there today see what is going on with the van it is in bits, been like that for over 3 weeks, like they are reluctant to do it or hiding something, spoke to a different person in the garage, he said that one of the injectors had caused it and don't know which one, don't think he was meant to share that information with me as original guy who was doing the work was off that day,

This what I think,
I think they have done the timing incorrect when the ca belt and new head was fitted

Or that the 2 new injectors and my remaining original ones have been fitted incorrectly,

I know I'm going to have trouble proving this, I just find it hard to believe that it was all a coincidence or just bad luck,

ive lost confidence in the garage, but have to bite my lip as van is in pieces can't drive it to another garage, Im going to give them a bit more time, before things turn sour,

Just wanted a bit of knowledge if I have to take it further, i have been very patient with them I understood things are not aways straight forward Im are tradesman my self,

I would really appreciate some help or advise as quite desperate ,

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

Hi mate, it sounds like you've suffered what's known as 'diesel runaway'. It's very possible that this could be caused by a badly worn piston ring, what mileage was on the bottom end?
When they replaced the turbo did they tell you why it had failed and if needed did they rectify the problem?

Re: piston ring gone on my renault traffic 1.9 dci

runaway mode is conman with a turbo failing seals is it possible they just renewed the seals and not fitted a new turbo
timing out as the crank has no key way if they did not tighten the crank pulley bolt correctly the timing can fail at any time taking the head off will give a good idea if the oil ring has failed the bottom end may well be due to runaway mode and not stalling the engine in time before the bottom end started to destroy itself
but all said and done with out the engine on the bench and looking at it its all hear say

Ring wear or bore wear does not & cannot cause a engine to over rev. The very most likely cause of this is turbo failure the centre main bearing on these run on a cushion of oil under pressure the slightest wear on bearing forces the oil past the seals which causes the run away. I would advise you to ask your garage for the turbo to get it checked out

Re: piston ring gone on my renault traffic 1.9 dci

Thank you for all your replies, the turbo went shortly after I had the new head fitted,

With the two new injectors,

They fitted a recon turbo but I did not see this as can't know for sure?

The van has done 196.000

So she has been to the moon and back,

I have seen the bottom half and there is a slight chunk missing from the piston ring and seem to have damaged the new top half,

They seem adamant that it is to do with the injector which they claim is damaged,

Don't know what to believe,

But something is not right I feel as I find it hard to believe that I can have all these major problems Over such a short time,

I had to take the van in 3 times after the turbo was fitted as the hose kept popping of from the manifold due to the clip which had perished, don't know what they done as a temporary fix silicone probably lol,

Again thank you for your responses as they have been helpful.

Re: piston ring gone on my renault traffic 1.9 dci

If you get to look at the bits and bobs that the mechanic has pulled out of the engine bay, ask to look at the air inlet manifold and the associated pipe work. Get yourself a clean white rag and pull it through the pipework, use your finger to wipe the rag around the air inlets of the inlet manifold. Ignoring the usual black carbon deposits, look for any signs of wet oil, if so, the there is a very high chance of (and has been already pointed out) the turbo is leaking.
My initial thought when I read " It was revving uncontrollably I even managed to stall the thing" was turbo failure and here's why...
When the engine is running you have oil pressure (hopefully)
When the turbo is spinning, it does very fast, roughly 20,000 rpm at idle then anything up to 200,000 rpm (depending on application)
So, if the seals surrounding the bearing start to leak the oil that the bearing floats on starts to leak out and onto the impeller of the turbo, this is then flung off (something to do with some sort of force - like being on a playground roundabout when you were a kid and getting flung off)
You then end up with a fine mist of oil getting forced into the air inlet and off your engine goes, and as oil has similar flammability value of diesel (hence why your V5 says "Heavy Oil") the internal bits that compress at roughly 20-1 couldn't care that the flammable bits coming in hasn't been controlled by anything and it's a catch 22 situation, higher revs = higher oil pressure = more oil displaced at the turbo = more fuel into the engine = higher revs and so on!

That's my rant over with, there may be a few technical discrepancies, but I am human after all :)
