Clio 1.5 dCi Diesel Purge

I ran a can of Liqui Moly Diesel Purge through my Clio II 1.5 dCi today. I know injector cleaners are a debated topic and many consider them snake oil (with good reason) yet I've heard consistently good reports of this Liqui Moly product and considering that it runs neat - as opposed to diluting 500ml of Redex to 50l of diesel in the tank - I thought I'd take a punt.

It was run through the system in order to both simply clean it and because the engine has always been slightly 'uneven' at idle upon cold startup. It's been this way for over 40k and has never affected the drive at all (no EML, no hesitation etc.). If it makes no difference, I'm not worried: it's only ~£10.

I saw a Youtube video where the owner intercepted the fuel lines at the filter but I considered that the process could be simplified by attatching the new lines straight to the HP pump.
Here's how I did it, for future use:

Disconnect the input and return fuel lines from the HP pump. Use a flat brade screwdriver to help depress the coloured tab if you need to, then gently wiggle the line off the terminal. Position a rag below each to catch any diesel that spills. The input fuel line to the HP pump from the filter is the one at the front. The return fuel line from the HP pump to the filter is the one on the right side (when looking at the engine bay). In the image below, the white/clear hose is connected to the HP pump input and the black hose is connected to the output:

Install a generic diesel inline fuel filter to the input hose and put the end in a clean, clear jar. Put the return hose into the same jar. Fill the jar with Diesel Purge (I put about 3/4 in to begin with):

Make sure the jar cannot tip over when the engine is running.

When you're done it should look like this:

To prevent any fuel spilling from the OE fuel filter, remove the same two lines that you've removed from the HP pump and attach a loop between the two exposed terminals:

Start the engine.
It might die after a few seconds because of the air in the new input line. Crank it again to pull the Diesel Purge through. Mine died once then took about 3 seconds of cranking to fire again, then it ran perfectly on the Diesel Purge.

The 500ml can took me about 45 minutes to burn through. During this time I let the engine idle and also ran it at 2000rpm for 10 minutes with a brick on the thottle:

Monitor the 'fuel' in the jar and don't let it run dry. I stopped the engine shortly after this photo:

Remove the new lines, reconnect the OE fuel lines to the HP pump and the OE fuel filter (I chose to replace my filter at this stage) and pump the primer bulb to remove any air.

You're done.
Start the engine and let it idle for a while to ensure there are no air locks.

The hose needed is 8mm I.D., which I found on eBay cheaply.
The filters were eBay specials, again cheap.
Diesel purge was from Amazon.
The jar contained mayonnaise in its first life. Jam also works well. Other condiments are available.

Finally, you are an adult: you are not forced to carry out this procedure. If you choose to, it is your fault if you ruin your car. Bear this in mind.
The photos and description above relate to my 2003 Clio dCi (65). Your particular 1.5 dCi may be different.
Your 1.9 dCi is definitely different, you should procede no further and give yourself a thorough talking to.

Enjoy! :d

But it will be you fixing it :d

Connection principle should be similar on most if not all diesels, details will vary.
TBH, doubt that a company as large as Liqui Moly would be selling the stuff if any danger of damage.
Whether it does what it says on the tin, all Greek to me :d

Will connect it using same principle as coventry and get my lad take some photos, wont hurt his car as its been off the road since April and got take it for M o T in the next couple of weeks, if it goes t-ts up, will put pictures of injectors stripped and put through the ultrasonic bath:d

Amazing what a good system clean does .. Had a tetra clean on the Mazda and it was a lot more responsive and the fuel return was up a couple of mpg

Don't know as it was son in laws pal who done it .. it nothing when I got it back only thing I noticed was pedal was a lot more responsive .. You actually wonder if it's in your mind at first

Oh this has changed nothing regarding the driving response (it was always absolutely fine) and the engine noise, which is the same. I don't know exactly to what extent it has cleaned the pump and, more importantly, the injectors but the difference in idle condition for my engine is marked. If that's the only change, I'm very happy!

Going to try this on a k9k 832 engine. However this engines fuel filter is different, it seems to only have 1 input from the tank and 1 output going to the hp pump. Now before I try this can anyone confirm that I definately do not need loop lines anywhere else to stop the diesel from pushing out everywhere!

PhotoBucket WAS the largest Image Hosting Site.
Like all good stuff, they decided to start charging.

This is why I always upload piccy's direct to this site.
Coventry, may still be active & see this.
