Scenic 1.9DTI - New Turbo limp mode - help please

Hello friends

I was wondering if any of you more experienced lads / lasses could shed some light on a problem I am having.

Customer brought in his Renault Scenic 1.9DTI said he needs a new turbo. The car was cranking with no start and puffs of dark smoke coming from exhaust. I replaced the turbo and car started but was hesitating when revved. There was also thick black smoke from exhaust and the light on dash came on putting the car into limp mode.

On further investigation I discovered that the intake manifold was full of gunk and the breather was clogged up. After cleaning it all the car started up fine and performed as expected during the road test. The customer returned after 2 days saying it was fine then earlier that day coming off the motorway the error light came up on dash and the car has no power.

I've removed everything again and changed the turbo again, checked all pipes, intake etc and they all seem fine. I've also taken full exhaust off a spare Scenic we have in the yard but the problem still persists. I've also replaced EGR valve and entire airbox with Mass sensor. Car is fine revving as it should until you go out on the road then the light comes on followed by limp mode.

The 3 different scanners I've got aren't particularly helpful either. They don't seem to want to connect properly. I've managed to get a code 100DE5 but can't find any info so not sure if the code is gibberish.

Please help, any ideas are most welcome.
Thanks.

If light is out when engine starts but comes on when revs exceed around 2,000 rpm the timing is a tooth out. Don't ask me why, there's no cam sensor, think the injection pump is seeing an incoherence with the crank sensor. Cause is usually because fragments of the shredded aux belt have made the cam belt jump.
Check the cam pulley's key hasn't sheared, it's made of butter! Sorry more work but maybe ££ too.

Wyn, you were spot on mate. Timed belt up and found the cam a tooth out. Took the pulley off and found the broken key just as you said. What is very annoying is that when I first replaced the turbo I checked the timing and it was fine. The customer said the timing belt had been replaced 6 months ago. The car went out and was fine for 2 days before returning. I immediately assumed the new turbo was suspect so I replaced it again just to be sure. I didn't think to check the timing again since it was fine when I checked it a few days earlier. I wasn't aware that these engines suffered from weak pulleys.

Eurocarparts don't have the part I need so I thought I'd call Renault just for a laugh. Turns out they can provide the whole kit for £55 (pulley and belt). I was pleasantly surprised. They'll only have it in for Saturday so I'll do the timing job then report back.

My theory behind what happened then was that since the turbo was almost dead along with the intake manifold being blocked and the EGR on its last legs, the car was running very poorly and under powered. Once I had cleaned it all up and replaced the turbo the engine had its full power again and the old pulley key couldn't take the stress and sheered off.

Thanks for the comments/suggestions so far.

The car is a 51 plate so 2001/2002 model. I've got an all purpose maxidas scanner that works well for most cars just doesn't like Renault it seems. I have problems scanning my 2004 Espace as well.

The only code my scanner has thrown up is
100DE5. The codes usually start with P or DTC but in this case I'm just getting the number above? Like I said earlier, it might just be gibberish since the scanner is having problems reading the ECU.

Going to check timing tomorrow.

This forum is for like-minded amateurs helping each other in a spirit of goodwill.
All those who post, be aware that you are helping someone who has already been PAID to sort this car.

I shall not be posting again on this thread.

Nottnoc, your comment was not necessary nor appreciated.

As a Fiat enthusiast I give loads of support and advice over on the Fiat Forum. That advice is free of charge. I work mostly on classic pandas, Unos, Puntos etc and this Renault was a favour to an existing client. I've helped loads of people locally with private projects etc. I've driven to people's houses to help whenever possible all in an effort to keep golden oldies on the road.

The customer had the turbo fault diagnosed independently which I fitted for him at cost + £85. Definitely not worth the 3 days I've spent already on this car. The initial job I did, as per his instructions has been done. His old turbo was blown so the replacement was necessary but obviously something else is still wrong. He doesn't have a lot of money and I'm trying to figure out what else is wrong with the car but I'm a bit stumped. If anything this job is costing me money.

Ok, we understand where you are coming from,..
but in the spirit of the forum, we look at it in differing ways.
Our advice is just advice..
So what ever any one thinks or replies ,,, it will always be advice,, to a person, not making a living from it, as such, we are here to help..
We would never mind a mechanic coming on and say he has dropped one.
We all do. And all the mods/supermods/admin and one every else would help.
But in the SPIRIT, of the forum.
So when some one comes on asking for help, but implying , money to be made.
You should be able to understand our dis-concern ..

With a bit of luck, one of our other guys will read this, as pretty sure this is Micky's field of expertise, but he has not been on for a couple of nights.
Sure he will be able to help.
I would be leading to an injector,, but, then it is leak off tests. (but you have not mentioned a starting issue) ..
How does it idle...

Thanks, glad to help especially as I only pretend to be a mechanic. The key on mine sheared after piston/valve contact almost sacrificially perhaps. I paid £160 10 years ago for pulley, belt and tensioner so it's probably old stock for £55! Don't forget key likely to have already sheared prior to your involvement as timing is by mark on pulley alone. Best.
