Hi Guys and Gals, this is my 1st post on the forums so go easy on me please
My story :-
Basically this is my 1st ever vehicle I have ever owned, a kangoo 665d 1.9 year 2000 (( showing 78,000 miles on the clock although it's possible it could be clocked. there were 2 previous owners [1] a female owned it for 15 years and a male for almost a year before me.. As expected it is not going to run like a new van , but I am am having a few issues which I'm hoping you can help me with your great knowledge.
Issues include :-
>> Cutting out a lot [seems like not enough revs] ( especially on initial cold start until i have had the van running at higher speeds for a steady time and then it drives a lot better. It can be sporadic sometimes it drives better than others.
>> There seems to be a loss of power especially on hills.
(1) Can anyone tell me if this model has an EGR valve, as some of my symptoms point to similar issues.
[a] Cold start gives me little revs and serious Black smoke until I get a full rev on and clear it.
The Glow plugs ( well at least the dash icon light ) seems to be ok as when the van has been driven for a bit and the engine heat is up they show up very briefly, compared to the 1st start. << just a note in case someone thinks this could be an issue.
(2) I started putting Redex into it last night in the hope that if there is any carbon build up in the system, that might clear it after an extended period of use.
(3)There is what seems like a hole in the exhaust { according to the fact that it sounds like a tractor and when I do a cold start i see Black smoke coming from just below the engine ( I will weld this myself at my friends )... could this be a contributing factor to the loss of power?
(4) I have had a quick look at the diesel and air filters, the air filter looks in good condition and the diesel filter prob needs changing but not so bad ( I plan to get a service done on oil, diesel and air filters this weekend, probably by myself .
[a] Should the diesel filter have a rubber seal on it? mine is the plastic cylinder type. I ask because there is none present.
*note* I have bought an ELM327 OBD2 usb dongle to test diagnostics, but as of yet I have not got a GUI software to work ( running a Linux computer ) but I am a bit of a whiz on the computer , so I will most definitely get this sorted out.
Thanks guys for any replies and any other questios that you have I will try to answer
EGR is always a suspect on diseasals.
There is a decent thread somewhere on cleaning them on the 1.9.
Cold start and rough running.
Glow plugs worth checking.
Strictly speaking, if a DCI they only help starting a little and aren't really needed. Do more for emission control.
But on older engines can help.
I'd suspect air ingress into fuel feed line. Fuel filter is a favourite especially with push in fittings if you have them.
Touch of grease around pipe/fitting is a temp "fix" that can help prove.
On checking the details of the ownership, there is no mention of it being a DCI. yes these are push in fittings on the fuel filter, thanks i will try a little grease to seal any air leaks there.
I will also look into finding some info on the cooling sensor ( must add to my original post that letting the van tick over for around five minutes without driving the temperature gauge goes up to around 3/5 compared to the usual running temp of around half way on the gauge )
Also I don't know if this a user fitted mod, but there is a pull switch on the dash to the right which has a yellow led , does anyone know what this is for? ( i can add a pic in the morning ).
I will search for the thread on cleaning the EGR for the 1.9 on here [ maybe someone has a quick link?? ]
Anyway thank you so much @Dancingdad for your time
But obd might not work on pre 2002
On your year it could be a DTI ( turbo fitted) or DI
Could have a lucas fuel pump fitted,, some one on here has covered the issues.
known with this pump, as regards cold starting issues
Search for Lucas diesel pump solenoid, either on here or in your internet search bar.
It will give you lots of pointers, on what to listen for when ignition is first switched on...
There is an OBD interface located in the fuse box. Thanks @ours2012 I will look into possible pump issues. I am a total noob to anything related to engines, but am a quick learner and good with spanners etc
@Dancingdad I will check to find out the exact details of the engine spec e.g DTI/DI . That switch must have some purpose, i will get a pic up here 1st thing in the morning and hopefully someone will recognise what it actually is for. You guys are great on this forum, thank you all so much for your time and knowledge.
I'm thinking it might also help if i video the startup and engine running and post a link to it also I'm new to this forum, so not sure on upload limits etc.
Right guys here's a video of me doing a cold start ( forgot to take a pic of the engine... I will upload that tomorrow ) . I noticed the smoke wasn't as black as usual which it normally is., perhaps the redex is starting to work? Anyway hopefully you will know a bit more by watching this. I can do more detailed videos if required. I should also do a vid of me driving if i can get a safe way to do this?
*note* I kinda got sidetracked today fitting a new radio/mp3/ player and didn't get around to doing the important stuff like OBD diagnostics and filter changes .....
You could try a diesel leak off test in-case you have an injector that is emitting too much fuel causing low power and dripping giving you excess smoke on start up
White smoke !
Smells of diesel/paraffin by any chance ?
Fired easily so not too worried on compression or cold start gizmo but rough and knocking more then I like on a diesel.
Does it keep that knock even when warm?
How easily does it fire when warm?
Still got the smoke?
My immediate would be checking glow plugs.
Could be one has failed and that is the knock and unburnt fuel being chucked out.
Possibly is overfueling, possibly only on cold.
With a DCI certainly would be looking at injectors but on what we think you have, pump controls fuel and injectors are relatively bomb proof.
Yes a strong smell of diesel/paraffin which seems to linger constantly.
Yes the knock seems to be a constant thing even on a warmer start.
Fires up slightly easier when warm, and some smoke but not just as much compared to a cold start.
Also I occasionally get what I would describe as a churning/grinding sound on some startups ( just at the point between key turn and the engine firing up, especially after the 1st initial failure to start.
I will provide the pump type the next time i lift the bonnet and get some pics for you guys.
I also had the same problem on a 1.5dci it ended up that the honeycomb on the cat had slipped forward partially blocking the cat and giving me smoke and lack of power.I changed egr, turbo, crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor before i found problem the only code i kept getting was Egr valve. If all else fails you could have a look at that but check the easier options first
Peugeot Citroen Ford 1.4 HDi engines do this, I have spent hour with a long screwdriver and saved a few people the cost of a new turbo they were told was the problem
Regarding the Cat, I have seen a few videos of people completely knocking all contents out of it, I'm unsure if they replace anything afterwards, would this have an adverse effect on emmission testing for my next psv?. I think this would maybe be a last resort after trying a few other trouble-shooting methods 1st. I still haven't had a chance to look at my van due to work and other real life things, hopefully this weekend tho once again thanks guys, i am taking all comments on board
I have done a few on Peugeot & Citroen cars including my nephew in Northern Ireland’s car, up there they have gubbermint MOT centres no chance of a nod and a wink and the 206 HDi passed MOT.
Is the grinding from the top of the engine or bottom if the top it might be a valve cover that has worn or a broken valve spring but if it is the bottom it would be more serious big end bearings or crankshaft. The air bubbles are not a problem mine has the same and runs fine.If it is a top engine problem that would explain smoke, poor running, cutting out and difficult to start. If you could borrow a diesel compression tester that would at least rule out a drop in compression from the valves
@sweepster .. It's hard to tell just where the grinding is coming from height ways, ( I will get someone to start it as I look/listen at the engine. I'm hoping that it is a less serious issue. It seems to be directly in front of me as i sit in the drivers side, and it doesn't happen every single time i crank the engine. I will try and get a video of this happening too.
Good to know about the air bubbles not being a problem.
The kangoo is really starting to stress me out, i feel like driving it off a cliff ( with me inside ) lol
Anyway seriously thank you guys for your time and knowledge, much appreciated!
I's start with a new fuel filter as it's cheap and comes with seals. Then like Santa check everything in the fuel system twice. Next check everything on the induction side, pipes joints etc.
Hi guys a bit of an update on my progress. The van was getting slowly worse last week, i.e taking up to 7/8 attempts to start ( even when warm ), , cutting out randomly while driving, stuttering while driving etc until thursday past when I drained the battery trying to start it.
On friday ( yesterday ) I went to buy a whole new diesel filter ( the plastic type ) as I noticed that when I tried using the manual hand pump to bleed it, the diesel was coming out the top of the unit, where I guessed that there should have been a rubber seal there.
Anyway I went to the parts store and the guy informed me that the actual filter ( the paper part ) came with a rubber seal for that unit. On changing this { and having somehow some power in the battery } and pumping the pump I was able to get rid of the air bubbles. .... Now the Important part, the van is driving brilliant ( has been anyway the past 2 days, no more stalling, don't have to over rev on taking off in traffic. It idles without conking out, and generally feels good to drive again.
The smoke issue still remains on initial cold start and is a bit less smokey when warm starting, but after a few controlled revs it clears out after about 10/20 seconds.
I have invested in a voltage checker and am in the process of trying to locate and test the glow plugs.
Note that I tried the obdautodoctor application on my Linux computer , but the program complains about not finding my ECU or something to that effect.
I will not mark the post as solved just yet until i get the van to start without as much smoke ( my neighbours will be glad I'm sure
