Hi all - please help? I'm a bit basic...
Firstly, time to come clean... I've had the car for nearly 2 years and not changed oil/filters - it's been needing the oil to be topped up more and more regularly, but with no leaks and no obvious smoking, apart from a puff when accelerating. I had a fair bit of 5w30 in the shed and have been using this, even though I realise that I should be using 10w40 (like I say, it was there and didn't cost anything) and as this was a bit thin, I was guessing this had something to do with the oil needing to be topped up a fair bit?
My 1.9 diesel '05 Scenic had something go pop last week and spilt oil everywhere. Had my mechanic look at it and found "oil separator" (the bit the dipstick goes down into) had cracked, so I had him replace this and give the car a much needed service as I had neglected it for so long. When the work was complete, the car was started and taken for a run, but the mechanic reported it was smoking a lot and he advised that the engine seems a bit "tired and on it's way out...". I didn't realise what he meant till I drove it later on and he wasn't kidding about the smoke - absolute tons of white, oily smelling smoke all over the place, especially at low revs.
I have put in some Wynn's glupe stuff from Halfords that is meant to help with worn piston rings etc, but it's not helping.
BUT, I had to take a fairly long journey today (and was expecting to get arrested with the anticipated smoke) and made the majority of the 80 mile journey on motorway + trunk roads with no obvious smoke until I slowed down when coming off the motorway, then loads of smoke at low revs/tick over and there while accelerating to 30ish mph. Seems to go if I can get going and stay at steady speed without moving accelerator much. Thank you.
Yes, I know that I probably deserve this, but can't really afford another car at present, so any help will be appreciated. p.s. sorry this is so long.
