Hopefully someone has come across this before - I tried to replace a dead plug and the replacement will not fit - The thread and shank are fine but the electrode tip is too large and will not fit into the head. I am not 100% certain that it is not a carbon build up but the old plug came out clean.
Please see picture below.

I think you may have wrong plug.
An old one from my 1.5DCI has same 3.35 at tip and 4.95 shank (as near as makes no difference)
But, the 3.35 diameter goes back some 7mm from tip, then increases to shank diameter.

I believe it is the 3.35 needed to fit the hole through the head.

The shank on your new one doesn't reduce as needed.

Just fitted some and the org ones were Beru with the numbers
0 100 226 504
82 00 464 077
they are about 5mm but the reduced tip is about 4mm and about 9mm from
were it starts to reduce to the tip, replaced with NGK's but unfortunately I
dont have the number. so I am with DD .

Folks - One more question on this - There does not appear to be any warning to indicate a glow plug fault on the Clio? On my other car the glow plug indicator on the dash illuminates again after the engine starts for a minute or so to indicate a fault. I take it there is nothing supposed to show on the Clio to indicate a glow plug failure?

Yup - I ordered a single plug only to find it was not compatible. I received the proper BEHR plugs this morning with matching Renault part numbers so should be a direct replacement.
As for the reason to changing them, when the temperature gets down to 1 or 2 degrees C the car runs lumpy for the first 10 seconds or so. I checked the resistance of all four plugs. Three matched but the fourth was very high so pretty sure it is goosed. I will change them out tomorrow and be able to give feedback the following day (if the temperatures stay low).

On the Clio the plugs are monitored in pairs by the ecu that's why there is a
voltage on them more or less all the time, this means you can have one plug
in each pair go bad and the light will stay out, but get 2 in a pair go and it
will put a light on the dash.

Just an update - The replacement BEHR plugs arrived today and I replaced the failed plug. The BEHR replacement was exactly identical down to all the numbers on the plug and the band colour (red).
A little apprehensive about torquing up to 15Nm as is seems quite a lot for such a fine pitch small thread but I gingerly nipped it up with my torque wrench and all was good.
Started the car which had been outside all night still showing -2 deg C on the display and what a difference - straight into a smooth (relatively) rattle free idle - Happy days.

I will keep the other three plugs as spares and each time I have the cover off the engine it will only takes a few seconds to check the resistances. I suspect this plug has been dead for a long time. I did the same with my other (non-Renault) car and it has 6 plugs. It was recommended to replace all six at the same time but that was more than a year ago and no further failures on that one so fingers crossed. The other car manufacturer's manual recommended a fancy high temperature grease on the plug shaft to prevent them becoming stuck in the head but as the plugs came out clean with no carbon build up I did not bother even though I bought the grease - Nothing in the Renault manual about lube so it also went in dry.

Dci engines don't usually need a lot oh heater plug help to start and someone
thought the starting performance was good enough with 2 out, the 4 pot
Perkins engine in the Rover 400 only have 3 plugs fitted the hole for the 4 th
plug not being drilled.

Just a follow up on the above - Glow plugs have been fine, engine running great from sub zero cold start however yesterday I read the fault codes with my cheapo OBD reader (chasing an airbag warning light) and the glowplug circuit fault code p0380 was still in the register. I erased the code and checked again this afternoon and it had not returned hence it must be logged until actually erased.

Now if we could only get it to do the same with intermittent airbag connector issues. The warning light on the dash comes and goes but no fault codes are logged - I traced that issue to the garbage pre-tensioner connector under the passenger seat. I presume a CLIP reader would be able to trace it but I have not come up against anything so far that could not be overcome without it (tempting fate).
