Picked up a 2003 1.6 scenic with a missfire, 72000 miles, is there anyway i can test the coil pack to rule it out before buying a new one.. i have a feeling the problem might be more serious

In a word No. Buy a coil, swap it down the line till the missing stops. Take the plugs out while you're at it & Re gap them.
Sorry no, BUY TWO Coils, stuff the spare in the boot, Not a case of If you need one, but when. Always had a spare since our first one with pencil coils.

Re: your misfire
I have been chasing a misfire on my son's Scenic 1.6l 16v for the last three years, it also brought up the MIL lamp, never been a problem really (not my car so I didn't have to look at it) but it annoyed me.
I serviced it and changed the water pump on it this week, and really set about sorting out the misfire, the engine never really suffered resulting from the misfire, except the idle was slightly rough, and it read 201 (misfire) and 202 (Cat error) on a diagnostic reader.
Checked all the coil packs, all equal and well within spec, plugs were new, so convinced myself it was fuel related.
Cut a long story short, the MIL lamp and misfire was down to a split 'O' ring on the MAP sensor. it could only have been sucking a minute amount of extra air, but enough to bring up a fault!
Changed the 'O'ring, cleared the ECU memory with a code reader and it has not returned after about 300 miles, engine now idles solid as a rock.
May help someone else with a similar problem?

Could be smart to do like chris says and check for air leaks, this is what we call over here for "fake air"

Any air sucked in after the maf sensor will give you problems. Spraying starter fluid is a great way to look for leaks.

If your car runs constantly in 3 sylinders I would just get a new coil and fit it and your problem will be solved most likely.

The thing about finding out what coil is broken on a renault is a bit tricky because two and two coils are sharing ground, so when you unplug one coil, you actually unplug two without knowing...

I usually use clip to find out, but I do believe on some models you can unplug one and one injector while car is running to find out what sylinder is misfiring.
Although I know its advised not to uplug them whilr car is running.

the old owner said a garage played about with the coils and plugs, then done a compression test, one cylinder was at 75 and others think it was 150, not sure what to believe..

looking at the delph coils they dont look old, hard to tell though...

removed the coils and plugs for a noise, turned the plugs around in pics, gm plugs???

edit: i refitted and sprayed wd 40 all over the coils and plugs around, incase was shorting or damp, worked with a old bmw i had years ago.. started the car and the eml was off and seemed to sound alittle better bit still could hear a miss, then the eml returned and it got worse.

should the eml be on soon as start car, has the wd 40 helped then it returns, or wishfullthinking lol

I would fit a set of coils and plugs. Be careful what plugs you fit. Depending on what you read I've seen different grades recommended. Not sure what Scenic this is but on the Mk 1 the washer pipe can split and drown the coils. Guess how I know!

Hi

Rather than start a new thread I saw this one - I have a Dec 2005 1.6 petrol and tonight after 6 trouble free years my engine suddenly lost power with "check emissions" on the dashboard. It is now running very lumpy with less power and a smell. My code reader shows P0300 which I believe means a random mis-fire? It also shows U1123 P. I am not a mechanic but would happily try a quick fix. I see this thread mentions new coils, is this easy for a relative novice like me?
Thanks in advance.

I would go for Spark Plugs first, when were they last changed? I had a lumpy engine and P0300 ( but I also had P0302 - pointing at cylinder 2 as well) and a new set of spark plugs saved the day
