1.9 Trafic Oil Leak & Turbo Issues

Hi All,

I've used this forum a bit for help and always found it helpful but never have posted. I am just looking for some guidance from someone with regards to a few issues that are doing my head in with my 03 Traffic. Back in July the turbo went on the van. I heard s scratching noise as if the vanes were scratching off the side of the housing and then the van ran away on itself. I panicked for a a few seconds as I hadn't a clue what was going on and then put it in 5th and cut the engine out that way. A few months ago I replaced the turbo with an Atec turbo from Germany. I cleaned out all the pipework and soaked the intercooler in petrol and made sure there were no blockages in the return pipe or drain pipe. I also took off the sump and fully cleaned it out and cleaned the wire pick-up gauze to make sure that wasn't causing a blockage to the oil flow. I put everything back together and the the van started up perfect and drove better than before. I have noticed a bit more smoke when I pull off aggressively from a standstill or put the foot down but it doesn't look like oily smoke but rather just black dirty smoke.

In the last while (it was brought to my attention when it failed the DOE) there is an oil leak coming from the back of the engine. I initially thought it was the turbo feed pipe as I could see that the rubber seal that sits on the pipe was pinched slightly however under further inspection it seems the oil leak is coming from above the oil feed pipe. Could it be squirting out upwards while its running and then dripping down or is it more likely to be something else. I can't seem to figure out where the oil is leaking from and whether it is engine oil or could potentially be gearbox oil that is dripping down as there is a small drip from the bottom of the gearbox. I have heard that the seal in the reverse switch on the top of the gearbox is known to go and it does look like there is a lot of oil around that area. Could that be the issue. When I took off the gearbox filler bung last night none came out so I am suspecting the level is low and I have not noticed any major drop in engine oil over the last while.

With that said my main issue of concern is that last night i noticed that there was some oil after dripping from the pipe going from the turbo to the intercooler. My initial instinct is that the f*cking seal in the turbo is gone which is a major pain. Can anyone give me any insight into why the seal is gone on the new turbo . I checked everything when i was replacing the old one and there were no blockages in any of the pipes. My only thoughts is that the oil pump might be faulty but I have had no low oil pressure lights come on at any stage. I have stopped using the van and am looking for some tips on diagnosing the issue. I am already after putting 1500 into the van in the last few months to try get it on the road which is probably more than its worth so I will be doing all the work myself but would appreciate any advice on what could be the issue or what I should check for both the oil leak issue and the turbo issue. I have a feeling that they could be related.

Apologies about the essay there is too much wrong with this van for just a single sentence but I would really appreciate some help from ye veterans out there. I can get as many photos as I can if that will help?

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Re: 1.9 Trafic Oil Leak & Turbo Issues

Oil feed or return pipe most likely culprits...
Wipe as much of the oil off as possible.
Then get a can of brake cleaner, Clean the rest off.
Get the van up in the air, securely so nothing can go pear shape....
Start the engine , and have a look.
These oil return pipes rot from the inside out, and small pin holes appear..
though not under pressure as such, spray out.
Would think if it is oil feed, you will see it clearly , (unless its the seals on the banjo fitting) and you would have more than a drip, but a great big puddle..

Going to apply for a job cleaning mirrors.
It's something I could really see myself doing.

Re: 1.9 Trafic Oil Leak & Turbo Issues

Thanks a million for the quick reply. I will try that again but I have already cleaned the whole area with brake cleaner especially around the return and drain pipe areas and there was no oil there after. It seems to drip from higher up. It is actually the seal on the banjo that is actually the one that is pinched but there is no oil dripping from the bottom of it which make some think there isn't an oil leak because like you said if it was leaking from there there would be a puddle.

Can you shed any light on what might be causing the new turbo to go?

Re: 1.9 Trafic Oil Leak & Turbo Issues

Why are you saying turbo is gone..
Take the feed pipe from airfilter off, have a look.
Black smoke on acceleration, EGR valve could just want a good clean.
Dont do the egr , until the leak is corrected
From the top of your engine down.
Rocker box cover, gasket there.
Then oil feed pipe seal, have been known to leak, especially if the oil feed pipe has not been secured correctly to the block..
If its gearbox oil , put your finger in it,,, have a smell, you will smell gearbox oil . It smells of cat P..
If not a great loss of oil , check for a leak not under high pressure, but under tick over and when stopped
Check your banjo seals, and recheck that the part the banjo goes through is not split,,,
A small amount of oil is very deceiving , it will go everywhere....
Bear in mind If you cannot find it, then a garage will also struggle. but a garage will start changing parts

Have put you a link up, have a look,, Not many places it can come from...
But if the oil feed pipe is this high up on yours, unless the fixing clamp has rubbed on the pipe???? Then there is not many places to check.

Re: 1.9 Trafic Oil Leak & Turbo Issues

I was getting worried that the turbo was gone again because I looked inside the pipe coming from the turbo to the compressor and there was a small amount of oil in it and there was some oil coming out the other end of the intercooler. From this I assumed that the seal in the turbo could be gone and oil is getting past and into the pipe and up to the intercooler.

Thanks a million for the advice. I'll check the rocker cover gasket and all the connections to the turbo . I should be able to get it over aa pit in the next few days and will be able to have a better look. I'll give an update after that.

Thanks
